Imagine a world where Oxford University, that bastion of male privilege, is thrown into utter chaos by the arrival of a single woman. Zuleika Dobson, a femme fatale with a mischievous glint in her eye, casts a spell over the entire student body. She’s a conjurer, you see, but her magic lies not in sleight of hand, but in the way she ensnares hearts with a single glance.
Zuleika, however, has a peculiar taste in romance. She only desires those who remain indifferent to her charms. This, of course, drives her suitors to the brink of madness. One by one, young men, blinded by love and despair, succumb to the ultimate heartbreak – suicide.
"Death cancels all engagements," utters one of the fallen, a chilling reminder of the devastating impact of Zuleika's capricious heart.
Max Beerbohm, with his pen dipped in wit and laced with a touch of the macabre, paints a darkly comic portrait of this social upheaval. His prose, a masterpiece of Edwardian elegance, evokes the languid atmosphere of Oxford, where tradition reigns supreme.
"It is a great work—the most consistent achievement of fantasy in our time… so funny and charming, so iridescent yet so profound," raves E.M. Forster, recognizing the brilliance of Beerbohm's satirical masterpiece.
Zuleika Dobson, a timeless tale of love, loss, and the absurdity of human nature, remains a captivating read even today. As Bertrand Russell poignantly observed, "I read Zuleika Dobson with pleasure. It represents the Oxford that the two World Wars have destroyed with a charm that is not likely to be reproduced anywhere in the world for the next thousand years."
About the Author: MAX BEERBOHM (1872-1956), dubbed "the incomparable Max  by George Bernard Shaw, was an essayist, caricaturist, critic, and short-story writer who endures as one of Edwardian England's leading satirists. Zuleika Dobson is his only novel.
