About this Item
An interesting 19th century watercolour depicting two characters from a novel by Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774). 'The Vicar of Wakefield' was published in 1766 and details the trails and tribulations of the Primrose family. This drawing captures the two main love interests Sophia and Mr. Burchell harvesting hay. The novel was one of the most popular and widely read 18th-century novels among Victorians. Well presented in a washline mount and gilt effect frame. Original inscription on the reverse reads 'Sophie & Burchell haymaking, see Vicar of Wakefield'. There is a signature 'Chas Taylor', to the lower right corner of the painting, however we presume this was added at a later date. Signed. On wove. Size: Medium (15-30cm) Framed: Yes.
