'84) to Ann [Skea], the Hughes scholar and author of Ted Hughes: The Poetic Quest (1994). Winner of the 1985 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the Signal Poetry Award. Dedicated to Clare and Michael [Morpurgo], Hughes's friends and Devon farming neighbours who had suggested the project to him, in aid of their charity, Farms for City Children. The author was to become its first President. Written in a mixture of prose and poetry, this 'farmyard fable for the young' follows the spirits of a sleeping "Farmer, his Wife and Son, the Vicar, the Poacher, and the Shepherd," as they describe the surrounding fauna. Each superimposes their version of the truth onto an animal, as refracted through their own experience, and therefore but partial. The authentic truth, as revealed in God's Word by the book's end, is the Blakean truth that every living creature is holy: "I am each of these things. And each of these things is me". In an introduction to a retrospective exhibition of the artist's work at the Hereford City Museum and Art Gallery in 1996, Hughes drew out the parallels between his vision and Lloyd's illustrations: "These were black and white drawings, but. one way or another, he has made each of these creatures a sacred figure". Lloyd, Sunstone Press issue of 200 sets in broadside format on heavy stock paper, n.pub., no place, no date but [1987], twenty-eight (28) sheets on heavy stock measuring 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", each absolutely pristine, FINE condition, each with the Lloyd animal color illustration; very scarce today in full sets. Background: in 1987 Ted Hughes, in collaboration with R.J. Lloyd (a prominent West country artist having worked with Hughes earlier), embarked on an artistic fund-raising project for his charity Farms for City Children. The project was a series of Hughes poems each on a single animal, to be illustrated with an artist of Hughes approval. Ultimately this produced in September 1987 both trade and limited edition octavo books with 28 poems published by Sunstone Press (ie Hughes and Lloyd) and later the book was reprinted by Faber with another illustrator not to Hughes' liking. BUT prior to the book, Hughes and Lloyd in May 1987 caused Sunstone Press to issue 200 sets of the poems and illustrations in broadside format, 28 sheets in all each bearing Hughes' printed name. They were often issued in sets enclosed loosely in a gray labelled portfolio at 450 pounds -(See Emory University Rose Library catalogue entry for their set). Some sets were signed (now being much, much rarer) but most were not; some sheets were sold separately making for fewer than 200 complete sets; Today the sets have become quite scarce with a set exactly like this for sale in New York City at $5000.
