Hardback. Condition: Good. Indonesian Ferry Sinks. Peruvian Bus Plunges Off Cliff. African Train Attacked by Mobs. Whenever he picked up the newspaper, Carl Hoffman noticed those short news bulletins, which seemed about as far from the idea of tourism, travel as the pursuit of pleasure, as it was possible to get. So off he went, spending six months circumnavigating the globe on the world's worst conveyances: the statistically most dangerous airlines, the most crowded and dangerous ferries, the slowest buses, and the most rickety trains. The Lunatic Express takes us into the heart of the world, to some its most teeming cities and remotest places: from Havana to Bogot on the perilous Cuban Airways. Lima to the Amazon on crowded night buses where the road is a washed-out track. Across Indonesia and Bangladesh by overcrowded ferries that kill 1,000 passengers a year. On commuter trains in Mumbai so crowded that dozens perish daily, across Afghanistan as the Taliban closes in, and, scariest of all, Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., by Greyhound. The Lunatic Express is the story of traveling with seatmates and deckmates who have left home without American Express cards on conveyances that don't take Visa, and seldom take you anywhere you'd want to go. But it's also the story of traveling as it used to be--a sometimes harrowing trial, of finding adventure in a modern, rapidly urbanizing world and the generosity of poor strangers, from ear cleaners to urban bus drivers to itinerant roughnecks, who make up most of the world's population. More than just an adventure story, The Lunatic Express is a funny, harrowing and insightful look at the world as it is, a planet full of hundreds of millions of people, mostly poor, on the move and seeking their fortunes.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Jesus Is Our Friend takes the reader on a spiritual journey through creation, life's struggles, life's joys, and Heaven in a concise manner with the words of Jesus as our guide. Carl Butcher grew up in inner city Cleveland. When the author was eleven years old, his father committed suicide. Carl wandered in the wilderness of life through his teenage years, then earned a bachelor's degree of Industrial Engineering and began to climb out of spiritual and financial poverty. What began as Carl Butcher's personal longing to research, analyze, and understand God's Word became a thirty-year endeavor that gave rise to him creating, and now sharing, this insightful, compassionate, and truly eloquent book. Carefully selected scripture presents God's laws and God's guidance to live in joy and righteousness. Bible verses are identified that answer our questions regarding suffering, personal fulfillment, the eternal purpose of life, and our relationships with God. The author's willingness to disclose personal tragedies, mistakes, and triumphs from his life makes Jesus is Our Friend so very readable. Carl Butcher writes from the unique perspective as a common man who found Jesus by perseverance in adversity and in studying the Holy Bible. The author's meticulous and methodical research, along with his heartfelt commentary, has produced extraordinary results. This book presents the teachings of Jesus Christ that prompt faith in God, contentment in your mind, and peace in your soul. The reader does not need prior knowledge of Jesus or knowledge of any theological terminology to understand Jesus Is Our Friend. This book is for those seeking answers to the void deep in their souls.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. We will always obey our Lord at all costs. This is the opposite of the spirit of lawlessness, which despises authority and cultivates chaos, division, and destruction. And there is no doubt that lawless and unrighteous acts are on the rise throughout this country. In a time when unholiness is rampant in our homes, schools, communities, churches, and abroad, there are alarming concerns about these escalating acts. If we're not students of God's word, growing in his grace and love as believers, we can find ourselves vulnerable to the rise of unholiness because it can distort our minds, heart, and attitude. It's important that God's children are on the front line in pursuing God's most divine nature of holiness and living as intentional followers of Christ. Because make no mistake: God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not pleased with all the unholy practices saturating our lives. They are calling believers to intercede in the gap and bridge God's holiness in people's lives As devout Christians, we are needed more than ever because an intense battle of spiritual warfare is spreading where evil is trying to take over, and we cannot allow this to happen.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. A radical re-think of our approach to everything from education, healthcare and work, to design, relationships and politics. An essential and inspiring read for everyone interested in our collective future. A revolution in how we age is here. Yes, ageing is inevitable: one year from now we will all be a year older; that will never change. What can and will change is how we age--and how we can all take a much bolder approach to doing it with vigour and joy. The time has come to cast off prejudices and to blur the lines of what is possible and permissible at every stage of life. In other words: we need to learn to re-imagine our approach to later life. Emboldening ourselves in older age demands big structural changes. For a start, we will have to tear up the old script that locks us into devoting the early part of our life to education, the middle chunk to working and raising kids, and whatever is left over at the end to leisure. In an age-inappropriate world, these silos will dissolve. We'll embrace the idea that we can carry on learning from start to finish; that we can work less and devote more time to family, leisure, and giving back to our communities in our middle years; and that we can remain active and engaged in our later years. Carl Honoré has travelled the globe speaking to influential figures who are bucking preconceived notions of age, whether at work or in their personal lives. He looks at the cultural, medical, and technological developments that are opening new possibilities for us all. …

Hardback. Condition: Good. Carl Olson offers a compelling and provocative argument against the application of postmodern thought to Religious Studies, showing how such radically skeptical thinking undermines, subverts, and distorts the study of religion. As Olson shows, Religious Studies is a newly and artificially constructed field for the scholarly study of religious narratives, thoughts, actions, and phenomena. It is an ongoing experiment with various types of methodological approaches to the study of religion, which is itself a human construct with limited cross-cultural application. Without a commonly agreed-upon method for the study of its subject, Religious Studies is characterized by the use of multiple methods, which tend to be adopted based on the latest trends in the field. Most recently, these trends have been dominated by postmodern thought. Because the discipline of Religious Studies is a product of the European Enlightenment with its values and representational mode of thinking, it is challenged and even threatened by postmodern thought, which calls into question many of its values, basic presuppositions, and convictions. After reviewing the many fads and fashions of Religious Studies, Olson examines various postmodern positions related to the study of religion, including those of Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, Marcel Mauss, Michel Foucault and Edward W. Said. Olson contrasts the thought of traditional history of religions scholars Mircea Eliade and Wendy Doniger with selected postmodern thinkers on the topics of hermeneutics, comparison, and difference. The Allure of Decadent Thinking concludes by exploring the postmodern challenges to such accepted concepts of religion and considers the long-term implications of a scholar's adoption of postmodern methods. Regardless of whether they are transformed by postmodern thought, Olson suggests, all methods and concepts should be subject to pragmatic review.…
