Framed Print. First Edition. A single-leaf black-and-white engraving presented under glass in a handsome black wood frame (28" x 23.5") with a speckled gold inner accent. The print is set within a custom off-white, raised mat (21.5" x 16") featuring a distinctive dark green border. The visible print area measures approximately 19.5" x 13.25". The sheet is captioned at the top margin: "542. The Illustrated London News, May 23, 1885., 543." The detailed caption below the image reads: "The Rebellion in the Northwest Territory of Canada: Colonial Troops Marching Over The Ice of Nepigon Bay, Lake Superior; From A Sketch by Captain H. De H. Haig, R.E., Assistant Quartermaster-General on the Staff of General Middleton." The print appears to be in very good condition, with a strong, dark impression and clean margins; there is a faint vertical crease to the centre where it was once folded for inclusion in the periodical. The custom framing and matting are of high quality and in excellent condition. (Not examined out of frame). Very good+. A piece of 19th-century visual journalism, the engraving offers a direct window into the Canadian government's military response to the 1885 North-West Rebellion. The resistance, led by the charismatic Métis leader Louis Riel, was the culmination of deep-seated grievances among the Métis and their First Nations allies over land rights, sovereignty, and cultural survival. The scene depicted is particularly significant as it shows the arduous overland journey of the North-West Field Force, commanded by General Middleton. The artist, Captain H. De H. Haig, was Middleton's own Assistant Quartermaster-General, making this an authoritative eyewitness account from within the military command itself. The image highlights the logistical feat of moving an army across the unfinished "gaps" of the Canadian Pacific Railway, an episode that proved the railway's strategic importance to projecting federal authority. The engraving represents the massive state effort undertaken to suppress the first and most significant Indigenous-led rebellion against the Dominion of Canada, a conflict that profoundly shaped the future of Western Canada and the nation's relationship with its Indigenous peoples.

An interesting and appealing collection of individual leaves extracted from The Illustrated London News, all pertaining to Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. The collection begins with stories about Toronto and a proposal for Sir John Ross' North Pole expedition. Other highlights include stories or mentions of mining in Greenland, the Red River exploring expedition, the lumber trade in British North America, Vancouver's Island, the Alaska territory, British Columbia, the British Arctic Expedition of 1875 led by Sir George Strong Nares, and much more. Includes a typed list summarizing the content of each leaf, prepared by a previous owner. A valuable collection of contemporary news about Canada, Alaska, and Greenland in the mid to late 19th century, with excellent engravings. Occasional light foxing or edge wear. Overall very good. Laid into a custom green cloth clamshell with leather label, with an original cloth cover of for The Illustrated London News attached to the front.
