This is the 2nd printing of the 1st edition, as indicated by the (2) at text bottom of very last page. (1) would have meant a 1st printing, (3) 3rd printing, etc. Spencer's last book. Preface's last sentence states: ".the volume herewith issued I can say with certainty will be my last. H.S., Brighton, March 1902". He died in Dec 1903. He coined the phrase "survival of the fitest". Tight text as bright & white as new. No aging or any other kind of stain. He was the Secretary of War under Louis XVI from 1778-80. VG+ books. Vols 1 & 2 of a 3 vol set. Bound in polished calf.
