This is the 2nd printing of the 1st edition, as indicated by the (2) at text bottom of very last page. (1) would have meant a 1st printing, (3) 3rd printing, etc. Spencer's last book. Preface's last sentence states: ".the volume herewith issued I can say with certainty will be my last. H.S., Brighton, March 1902". He died in Dec 1903. He coined the phrase "survival of the fitest". No fold line tears BUT: pin hole in one of the fold line intersections, a few incorrect fold lines and both are lightly foxed. First map with a 1" tear at inner most fold. Tight text block. Most pages lightly aged or few foxed spots. Covers quite worn. All edges worn thru to underlying cardboard. Spine worn, gilt lettering faded. Upper 2/3 of upper board split. GOOD - Very Good book, 3/4 brown leather, marbled boards & eps.
