This would have been one of Rouselle's later bindings. Upper inch of rear gutter line cracked, a few tiny scuff marks on spine itself. Spine lightly sunned but gilt lettering & numbers seem as bright as new. One other tiny flaw at fep front margin. Silk page marker. With the Brick Row Book Shop's oval ticket inside front cover. Brick Row used this design till about 1940. Tipped in slip from a dealer catalog about this very book. From an old Brick Row catalog? 17.5x12(cm), 177pp. FINE book. George Wharton James" & "To my good friend and pupil Florence A Huck. Who does "Radiate" all that my friend James asks. With the best wishes for a happy birthday. March 28th 1928. Half tp: "To Howard J. Samuels, with best wishes, Lyndonbjohnson". A laid in news artical states Samuels served as undersecretary of Commerce and chief of the Small Business Administration under Johnson. In WWII he had been a colonel in Patton's Third Army. He was an American statesman, industrialist and civil rights activist. He had been an advisor to John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. Also laid in is a typed note, in FINE condition, from the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, John J. Bailey, stating "The President has personally autographed this copy for you." The book itself is flawless. Very tight, it stays closed when stood on its spine, so likely never been read. DJ front, back and both flaps, clean as new. DJ extrems do have minor wear. AS NEW book, VG+ DJ. Laid in Democratic National Committee note.

After the number 17 is the pencilled note: "eighteen". The first plate stands by itself after page 7. At the top of the 2nd plate, which is positioned just after page 148, is a pencilled note about plate 1's exact location. About 6 leaves with short closed margin tears, one of which with an associated 1/2" chip. Very Good book. FINE text. 1st ed. Text block edges tinted red.

Lightly foxed text; pre & postlims a bit more so, Published by the Bibliotheque Universelle in 1833, who published most of de la Rive's papers. Publisher's full name was "Bibliotheque universelle des sciences, belle-lettres et arts". He became its head in 1836. Book is cited on p.241 (shown on PIX 5) of Soret's 1877 "AUGUSTE DE LE RIVE Notice Biographique". The book is a survey of the knowledge of electricity up to 1833. Rive wrote another comprehensive survey in the 1850s titled "Traite d'electricite theorique et appliquee" It's as widely known as "Esquisse Historique" is not. The Concise Dictionary of Scientific Biography has three sentences on de la Rive, the last being "Was a leader in the Swiss scientific community .". Uncommon. WorldCat finds the hard cover book in only 14 libraries. Rare Book Hub records have no listings. American Book Prices Current show none ever auctioned. ABPC records go back 100+ years. Nor has a copy ever been sold on Ebay. Very Good book. 1st thus. 8"x5", 239 pages, errata slip.
