8vo. A fine hardback in very clean thor. vg. dw., neatly strengthened on underside. Price clipped. This is a first edition of the revised book 'New Naturalist 6, The Highlands and Islands' by Fraser Darling, which was first published in 1947.

DJ complete with $75 price. No DJ chips or tears, even @ 1/10", but the extrems do show some trivial scuffing. There is a minor misprint. The first two words of the DJ front flap state: "656 pages". This # 44 of limited edition of 50 copies, printed on China paper made by Hollande de van Gelder. Bound by Emile Rouselle (original wraps bound in) w very ornate gilt dentelle turn ins, but austere board outers with zero decoration, not even in blind. 5 raised ribs with gilt lettered title in 2nd panel & 1885 at very bottom of spine. This would have been one of Rouselle's later bindings. Upper inch of rear gutter line cracked, a few tiny scuff marks on spine itself. Spine lightly sunned but gilt lettering & numbers seem as bright as new. One other tiny flaw at fep front margin. Silk page marker. With the Brick Row Book Shop's oval ticket inside front cover. Brick Row used this design till about 1940. Tipped in slip from a dealer catalog about this very book. From an old Brick Row catalog? 17.5x12(cm), 177pp. FINE book. Limited edition. #44 of 50 copies on China paper.

BOOK'S SOLE FLAW, spine sunned to a rich brown. 5 raised spine ribs divide spine into 6 gilt edge ruled panels. Title & author in two panels, "1917" at bottom. Other 4 panels with star in each corner and single floral stem inside. All letters & decor in gilt. Gilt dentelles & turn ins. Each turn in corner with same floral stem & star pattern. Grabau signed the front bottom turn in. Same design on rear turn ins but with 1928 at rear bottom turn in. This the binding date and date of Grabau's inscription. James' signature undated. Back boards with two gilt ruled edges. Front outer edge gilt ruled. Inside these a set of 6 rules with starburst @ top & stylized initials GWJ at bottom. Ends & edges of boards with gilt arrows. Marbled pastedowns & slipcase. Slipcase also FINE. Grabau started his binding career with Roycroft under Louis Kinder and formed his own bindery in 1905. PBA Galleries 7/17/14 auction, "Roycroft Press from Awald's Buffalo, NY, library" had many Grabau lots. Inscriptions read: "I would live to radiate joy, peace, purity, brotherliness, helpfulness. George Wharton James" & "To my good friend and pupil Florence A Huck. Who does "Radiate" all that my friend James asks. With the best wishes for a happy birthday. March 28th 1928. John F Grabau 'Tah- do- dah' Buffalo". Under this Grabau inked a small Indian peace pipe. FINE book, FINE Grabau binding. 1st ed.

Hardcover. 1st ed 4th prt. AS NEW book, VG+ DJ(in Brodart). Johnson inscribed & SIGNED half title page with a blue felt tipped pen. 1st ed, 4th prntg. DJ with $5 price, extrems with minor wear. Half tp: "To Howard J. Samuels, with best wishes, Lyndonbjohnson". A laid in news artical states Samuels served as undersecretary of Commerce and chief of the Small Business Administration under Johnson. In WWII he had been a colonel in Patton's Third Army. He was an American statesman, industrialist and civil rights activist. He had been an advisor to John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. Also laid in is a typed note, in FINE condition, from the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, John J. Bailey, stating "The President has personally autographed this copy for you." The book itself is flawless. Very tight, it stays closed when stood on its spine, so likely never been read. DJ front, back and both flaps, clean as new. DJ extrems do have minor wear. AS NEW book, VG+ DJ. Laid in Democratic National Committee note.

(8),(i),ii-li,(1)-7,plt 1,8-148,plts 2-8,149-192pp. Leaves are 227mm high. Collated complete. Leaves as bright as new. No aging or foxing. A few leaves with a spot of very light soiling. There are two bits of relevant marginalia. Page 28, titled "Of the Modern Alphabet" lists 17 letters, numbered 1-17. Letters numbered 13 and 14 have a pencilled note between them: "omitted R". After the number 17 is the pencilled note: "eighteen". The first plate stands by itself after page 7. At the top of the 2nd plate, which is positioned just after page 148, is a pencilled note about plate 1's exact location. About 6 leaves with short closed margin tears, one of which with an associated 1/2" chip. Very Good book. FINE text. 1st ed. Text block edges tinted red.

The 1900 rebind had trimmedd leaves down to 24X17cm. (2),3-11,(12-1),2-255,(blank), 71,(72),(1), 2-40.(8)pp. Engraved title pages, head & tail pieces, initials & 40 plates. Light tide marks on pages 9 & 11. Plates of both sets with very strong and dark impressions. Book had been rebound each additional 1628 plate placed next to this edition's same numbered plate. 1628 tp pasted to 1590 tp verso. In the attached pictures left is from 1590, right from 1628. The 1628 tp has GERUSALEMME spelled without the "I". Owner's note at last page botton states book was bought in 1660. VERY GOOD book. 20 full page engravings, head & tail pieces.

Lightly foxed text; pre & postlims a bit more so, Published by the Bibliotheque Universelle in 1833, who published most of de la Rive's papers. Publisher's full name was "Bibliotheque universelle des sciences, belle-lettres et arts". He became its head in 1836. Book is cited on p.241 (shown on PIX 5) of Soret's 1877 "AUGUSTE DE LE RIVE Notice Biographique". The book is a survey of the knowledge of electricity up to 1833. Rive wrote another comprehensive survey in the 1850s titled "Traite d'electricite theorique et appliquee" It's as widely known as "Esquisse Historique" is not. The Concise Dictionary of Scientific Biography has three sentences on de la Rive, the last being "Was a leader in the Swiss scientific community .". Uncommon. WorldCat finds the hard cover book in only 14 libraries. Rare Book Hub records have no listings. American Book Prices Current show none ever auctioned. ABPC records go back 100+ years. Nor has a copy ever been sold on Ebay. Very Good book. 1st thus. 8"x5", 239 pages, errata slip.
