All edges marbled but with bottom edge retaining stronger color than fore-edge and top edge. Some toning and minimal foxing to leaves. Antiquarian ink signature "Jas. A. Stevens" at top of pictorial title page (likely being Columbus, Mississippi resident James A. Stevens who was publisher/editor of The Columbus Index newspaper, aka The Columbus Weekly Index, which was published from 1869 to 1893 before changing names under a new owner); two line ink inscription "Emma Bell - | 1889." at top of first original flyleaf. Tyrwhitt's Preface and two other essays on pages i-lxx mostly as single column text; remaining Chaucer text mostly as double column with "The Canterbury Tales" on pages 1-172, "Notes on 'The Canterbury Tales'" on pages 173-209; major poems ("The Romaunt of the Rose," "Troilus and Creseide," "The Booke of the Dutchesse" "The House of Fame," "The Legend of Good Women," etc.) on pages 211-436; minor poems on pages 436-439; and concluding Glossary on pages 441-502. Presented in the publisher's black cloth-covered clamshell box, titled in gilt to spine. Just a touch of light handling. Near fine.

Printed pagination sometimes incorrect, with corrections in manuscript -- correction at leaf 57 in third section* appears to be incorrect, and appears to be missing leaf 83**. With 7 smaller, later manuscript leaves tipped-in. Boards rubbed; light scuffing at spine tips, along joints and edges of boards. Title page toned, and lightly chipped along the edges, with early ownership signature and stamp; text block a bit brittle along the edges. Bookplate of the New York City Bar Association. Covers regnal years 1343-1366, Edward III. With an index of cases, side-notes and cross-references. Edward's long reign of fifty years saw vital developments in legislation and government, in particular the evolution of the English parliament. An extremely important source for our knowledge of medieval common law.

Recently re-backed, with the original panelled and speckled calf boards, and the original plain speckled…calf laid over spine, with raised bands. All edges trimmed and speckled. Delightful 'Alice' themed illustrated bookplate of Edgar F. Leo to front pastedown. Repairs to hinges, and some chipping to fly-leaf margins, otherwise internally crisp and clean. Heavily worn original leather binding has been restored to an attractive, robust condition, including repairs to the corners. Very good. A fine blackletter Chaucer, editor Speight being the first to print a portrait of the poet. Includes the recently discovered conclusions to the Cook's Tale and the Squire's Tale, and, at the end of the prefatory matter, 'three more poems. which might as well have been consigned to oblivion' (Skeat), also found in the 1542 and 1550 editions.
