One large historiated woodcut initial at beginning. Contemporary decorated paper wrappers. The official code of conduct for the Papal Militia, listed as 42 articles, dated 7 February 1793, signed by its commandant general, Enea Count Caprara, and by the auditor general, Francesco Maria Rufini. The papal troops are to be loyal to the Roman Catholic Church and its supreme pontiff, they are not to blaspheme the saints, read prohibited books, accuse others falsely, neglect their guard duties, desert their post, engage in duelling, commit indecent acts, steal, keep concubines, show disrespect to superiors, engage in games of chance, cheat, nor commit vandalism, on pain of severe punishment. The 14 different modes of military punishments for transgressors, ranging from detention to decapitation, are listed at the end. The papal militia was not considered effective at this period, and indeed proved useless when Pius VI was taken prisoner by the French in 1797. A fresh copy.

Condition: Good. Folio (290x205 mm). 12 pp. With woodcut papal arms on the title page. Later wrappers. A very good copy. Uncut.Original printed edict in Italian, issued by the Inquisition of Rome on 5 April 1775 and affixed on 20 April, relating to laws affecting the Jews.In the opening words, the notary of the Holy Inquisition states that this same decree had been issued by Clement XII in 1733 and Benedict XIV in 1751, and now orders its publication and punctilious fulfilment.Historically, it is a most interesting record of both the great and petty tyranny that was inflicted on the Jews, and of the tortuous methods employed by the Inquisition in enforcing their malicious laws. There are forty-four clauses in this edict, the forty-third-compelling Jews to attend evangelical sermons-being, perhaps, the most pernicious in its sublety. No Jew was to possess, buy, write, copy, translate, sell, give or otherwise dispose of, in any manner whatsoever, ?any codex or book on the Talmud, Cabbala or the Old Testament; or anything containing errors against the mysteries of Christianity and the Trinity?; neither might the Jews teach Hebrew or any other religious doctrine, sub paena of ?loss of books, confiscation of property, and other penalties? Printers of such books likewise incurred the same penalties.Jews were forbidden to utter prophecies or teach anything appertaining to the occult; Christian silversmiths were forbidden to make amulets or charms for Jews ?who are in the habit of giving them to their children to wear?; or to fashion candelabra with seven sconces which the Jews used. They might light candles and practise funeral rites in the Synagogue, provided no Christian was present, but no funeral procession was permitted. No Jew was allowed to entertain under his room any neophyte or catechumen; or to dissuade anyone, however indirectly, from converting to Christianity, under penalty of the galley, imprisonment, confiscation of goods, or fines. Both Jews and Jewesses were to wear conspicuously upon their dress, the distinguishing yellow badge, in and outside the Ghetto, and in Rome, but might be excused on a journey.Jews were not allowed to sell, or otherwise distribute, meat, bread or milk, and might only purchase sufficient for their own use but not for purposes of trade. They were not permitted to purchase or sell Images, pictures, crucifixes, breviaries, missals, altar cloths, or any sacred ornaments used in churches, sub paena of a fine, which the Christian associate was also liable to incur, and punishment in the galley. The punishment for any Jew having commercial or financial relations with a catechumen was a fine, a public flogging, and other ?arbitrary? punishments! No Jew might keep a shop or lodging-house outside the Ghetto; or hold a meeting with Christians or even with Jews in the public market-place, sub paena of the loss of his shop.Jews might not invite Christians into the Synagogue, and the penalty for Christians entering such place of worship was a fine of fifty scudos. Jews were forbidden to enter into any contract for leaseholds; to avail themselves of the services of Christian nurses and midwives; of permanent or temporary servants, even ?for the briefest moment to light their fires? (presumably on the Sabbath); to converse or fraternise with Christians ?in the palaces, houses or vineyards, or the streets, inns, taverns or elsewhere?; to drive in a carriage in Rome or its environs, sub poena of imprisonment; the only exception being in the case of a journey, when permission might be granted for the use of a horse or public coach, but no Christian or Jew might serve a Jew as coachman, etc.No Jew was permitted to spend the night outside the Ghetto, the hour of retiring being limited to midnight, while he was also forbidden to leave the Ghetto very early in the morning; nor, of course, was he permitted to reside outside the Ghetto.Jews were even prohibited the simple pleasures of the local fairs without special licence. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. FIRST EDITION. Printed on blue paper. In contemporary mottled calf, the spine and boards tooled in gold. A very fine copy of the very rare first catalogue of the Museo Pio-Clementino - founded by Pope Clement XIV in 1771 and greatly expanded his successor by Pius VI-, written for the use of visitors by the keeper of the museum, Pasquale Massi of Cesena. Rare. The Museo Pio-Clementino was the first major curatorial museum within what are known today collectively as the Vatican Museums. In 1771, Pope Clement XIV had Michelangelo Simonetti adapt the Belvedere Pavilion to accommodate the papal collection of ancient art. When Clement's successor, the avid art collector Pius VI, was elevated to the pontificate in 1775, the pace of acquisition increased dramatically and very soon the collections outgrew the rooms arranged for them by Simonetti. In 1776, Pius VI called for a radical restructuring of the existing museum and the construction of new, grand spaces to house the ever-expanding collection. Massi's catalogue, a room-by-room guide of the museum with descriptions of all of the artifacts and artworks housed therein, is an invaluable record of how the greatly expanded museum of antiquities looked in the late 18th century, with its newly constructed series of rooms and the recently installed masterpieces of ancient sculpture -the fruits of some of the most important excavations in Italy, including the excavation of Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. In addition to providing a record of the arrangement of the exhibits, Massi's catalogue, in which he provides details of provenance, acquisition, and attribution of each artwork described, serves as a history of the museum's formation, and preserves valuable information about the art trade and the function of archaeology in the late 18th century. Massi has used a system of numbers and letters to indicate which works were added to the museums by Julius II and his various successors, above all Clement XIV and the then-current pope, Pius VI. In his introduction, Massi tells us that he has designed his guide for portability and easy reference by tourists, by arranging the descriptions of the objects in each room in the form of a walking itinerary. Since it is necessary at two points to retrace one's steps, Massi's guide leads us along one side of each room as we proceed through the galleries. When it is time to reverse our course, he leads us along the opposite side of the rooms already traversed, thus keeping us engaged and entertained as we retrace our steps through the vast complex. Our tour begins at the new entrance to the museum, in the corridor of Cleopatra, also known as the corridor of the inscriptions, just within the new entrance to the museum. We then pass through two vestibules. The first one is square, with frescoes by Giovanni da Udine in the vault. In it we encounter the tomb of the Scipios and the Belvedere Torso. The second vestibule is round and in its center is a large bowl made of pavonazzetto. From here we proceed through a corridor into the porticoed, octagonal courtyard of the Belvedere, the site of Julius II's first installation of ancient sculpture, transformed by Simonetti in the 1770's. Massi then leads us through the hall of the animals, the gallery of statues, the gallery of busts, and the "loggia scoperta" (the room of masks). We make our way back through these galleries to arrive at the series of rooms created by Simonetti in the 1780's. The first of these is the hall of the muses. We then enter the breathtaking Sala Rotonda (with its immense, newly installed, ancient porphyry basin from the Domus Aurea), through which we make our way to the Sala of the Greek Cross, where we find the newly installed ancient porphyry sarcophagus of Constantine's daughter, Constantia. From here Massi takes us, via Simonetti's new staircase, up past the unfinished hall of the biga, to Bramante's vast gallery of the candelabra, which is itself divided into numerous rooms with vases, statuary, and jewelry. Exiting by the stairs we visit the library and trace our way back through the new wing and via the Belvedere courtyard (where we marvel at the Laocoön and the Belvedere Apollo) to the cortile, the great open court of he complex, where our tour ends.

In fair condition, lighly aged at extremities, with the second leaf, carrying the address ('Dr. Farre | Charter House Square', with postmark), laid down on part of a leaf removed from an album. Locock's note, on the recto of the first leaf, reads: 'My dear Sir - | We will not trouble you to call on Miss Gladstone tomorrow, as she remains much the same, and they are rather anxious to get out of Town.-' Farre's unsigned reply, on the reverse, complains that Locock's letter 'reached my hands too late to prevent on the 31st. the painful because useless Visit which I paid Miss Gladstone & to accomplish which I postponed a case even more important than her own.' He points out that the postmark is '7 night 30 Mh: 1830', and thus 'could not reach Charter House Sq. until the 2d. delivery on ye following day'. In any case, he would not have received it if it had been earlier, as he does not go 'to Charter house Sq. until one oClock'. According to Locock's entry in the Oxford DNB, he 'for many years had the largest practice in London as an accoucheur' and in 1840 was appointed 'first physician accoucheur to Queen Victoria, and attended at the births of all her children, using chloroform in later ones'. Farre's entry in the ODNB states that he 'founded and edited [] the first ophthalmic periodical', the Journal of Morbid Anatomy, Ophthalmic Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Analysis. He published works in a number of medical fields, and his pathological specimens are preserved in the museum of St Bartholomew's Hospital.
