En el segundo, es un pobre obrero sin recursos que se ha visto obligado a robar para sobrevivir quien termina siendo condenado a muerte por rebelarse contra la dureza del sistema penitenciario y matar al director de los talleres de la cárcel. La descripción del sufrimiento de ambos personajes apoya la creencia de Victor Hugo de que la pena de muerte no tiene ningún valor positivo: es injusta, inhumana y cruel, y la sociedad que la aplica es tan responsable de un crimen como cualquier otro./ R29-4.

Nuestra Señora de París (Notre-Dame de Paris, en francés) es una novela de Victor Hugo, escrita en 1831 y compuesta por once libros que se centra en la desdichada historia de Esmeralda —una gitana— , Quasimodo —un jorobado sordo— , y Claude Frollo —un archidiácono— en el París del siglo XV. Todos sus elementos —ambientación renacentista, amores imposibles, personajes marginados, final dramático— hacen de la obra un modelo de los temas literarios del Romanticismo francés. Victor Hugo, tras separarse de su mujer Adèle, escribió la obra por encargo de un editor, llevándole aproximadamente 6 meses y agotándolo físicamente. Pero el esfuerzo valió la pena ya que fue bien valorada por los críticos y tuvo gran éxito entre los lectores, cosa que le supuso un alivio económico. / R59/2.

Pierre Roussel realizó sus estudios de medicina en Montpellier, después marchó a París, asistiendo a las clases de Bor…deu. Su sensibilidad le impidió practicar la medicina, consagrándose a la teoría, el estudio de la historia y de la filosofía para clarificar sus investigaciones médicas. Éstas se publicaron en numerosos artículos. Mme Helvétius, que lo recibía en Auteuil, lo presentó a Cabanis. Su Sistema físico y moral, loado por Laharpe a partir de su publicación en 1775, conoció un gran éxito y fue varias veces reeditdo. Tratado filosófico tanto como médico, hay originales ideas sobre la menstruation, que sería más de origen social que biológico. Tiende también a constatar la realidad de la imaginación de las mujeres embarazadas. Esta "base de una antropología femenina" durará mucho tiempo.
