    24,3 x 18,5 cm. Verso Stempel mit handschriftlich eingetragenem Filmtitel und Schauspielernamen. Über Stroheims Wiener Kinder- und Jugendjahre ist nur wenig bekannt. Er arbeitete zuerst in der Strohhut-Fabrik seines Vaters, woran sich eine angebliche Militärkarriere anschloß, von der Stroheim später zwar oft erzählte, die aber durch nichts belegt ist. Aus bis heute ungeklärten Gründen verließ er 1909 seine Heimatstadt und ging in die USA. Dort schlug er sich mit verschiedenartigen Tätigkeiten durch, bis er 1914 mit der jungen Filmbranche in Berührung kam und dort erste Erfahrungen als Statist und Stuntman sammelte. Einer der ersten Filme war "The Birth of a Nation" von David Wark Griffith. Dieser wurde auf ihn aufmerksam und verhalf ihm zu größeren Filmrollen. Da Militär und Adel eine besondere Faszination auf ihn ausübten, begann er in Hollywood gezielt sein Image als Abkömmling eines alten Adelsgeschlechts aufzubauen, er behauptete sein voller Name sei Graf Erich Oswald Hans Carl Maria Stroheim von Nordenwall und er sei, als Sohn eines Grafen und einer deutschen Baroness, Kavallerieoffizier und Leibwache des österreichischen Kaisers gewesen. Durch dies und eine entsprechende äußere Erscheinung erhielt er immer wieder Rollen als Militärs der verschiedensten Dienstgrade. Für den Film "Alt-Heidelberg" von John Emerson wurde er 1915 wegen seiner großen militärischen Fachkenntnisse sogar als technischer Berater engagiert. Danach folgten viele Filme, in denen er meist Bösewichte oder deutsche oder österreichische Offiziere darstellte. Mit Kriegseintritt der USA im Ersten Weltkrieg gab es auch zunehmenden Bedarf an Filmschurken in deutscher Uniform und Stroheim war die ideale Besetzung. So spielte er in dem Film "The Heart of Humanity" von Allen Hollubar einen deutschen Offizier, der eine Krankenschwester vergewaltigen will und ein schreiendes Baby, das dabei stört, aus dem Fenster wirft. In "The Unbeliever" läßt er wieder in einer Offizersrolle ein Kind und dessen Großmutter erschießen. Solche Rollen wurden ihm in Deutschland lange Zeit sehr übel genommen, brachten ihm den Ruf eines Vaterlandsverräters ein und rechtsradikale Kreise fühlten sich in ihren antisemitischen Vorurteilen vom jüdischen Schädling bestätigt. Die deutsche Presse veröffentlichte Boykottaufrufe und Hetztiraden gegen ihn. 1919 führte er in dem Kassenschlager "Blind Husbands" erstmals Regie und spielte auch eine der Hauptrollen, weitere erfolgreiche Regieaufgaben folgten. Seine extreme Detailversessenheit und sein exzentrischer Regiestil, die fast immer die Produktionskosten rasant in die Höhe trieben, brachten ihn aber auch immer mehr in Konflikte mit den Studiobossen und ruinierten zunehmend seinen Ruf als Regisseur. Nach 1936 fand er in den USA kaum noch befriedigende Arbeit. Dies und eine Reihe privater Schicksalsschläge bewogen ihn ein Angebot aus Frankreich anzunehmen. Dort arbeitete er u.a. auch mit Jean Renoir zusammen, mußte aber nach der deutschen Besetzung Frankreichs erneut nach Amerika fliehen. 1943 spielte er in Billy Wilders Kriegsfilm "Five Graves to Cairo" den Generalfeldmarschall Rommel.
