Softcover. xxxii, 556, [1] p.; 22.5 cm. `The first intimation that the older orthodoxy was being challenged was the appearance of Edward White's Life in Christ in 1846. White, like Robert Browning, had been brought up under the rigidly orthodox ministry of George Clayton at York Street, Walworth. He was horrified during his youth by the doctine, as expounded by his minister, that God had created countless numbers of human beings that were destined to suffer eternal punishment. He found some solace by going surreptitiously to King's Weigh House to hear Thomas Binney, but his fundamental dread remained. By careful study of the New Testament, White became convinced that "immortal life is through Christ, and only in Christ for regenerate men." That standpoint was not in itself remarkable. It was the negative side of White's conclusions that inflamed his critics. He held that there was no immortality apart from Christ and that, therefore, the ungodly would be destroyed. They would not be tortured eternally. In other words, White rejected the Platonic doctrine of inherent immortality.' (R. Tudur Jones, Congregationalism in England 1662-1962, p. 248 f.) -- `In February 1870 the Christian World started a series of articles on the Future Life and asked Edward White to open the discussion. So great was the interest in this topic that White re-wrote his Life in Christ.in 1875. Not only was White attacked from the orthodox side by Charles Haddon Spurgeon but from the Universalist side by his fellow ministers Baldwin Brown and H. H. Dobney.
