2pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The recipient (who dockets the reverse of the second leaf) is not named. He has received the letter in which the recipient, as Chairman, has requested him 'in pursuance of the 8th Resolution agreed to at that Meeting, to accept the office of Vice-President'. He continues indignantly: 'To every plan that tends to promote the general education of the People of this country, and to impart to them the advantages & blessings of Religious instruction, I am decidedly friendly, but to a system purporting to be National, virtually excluding the children of those who may differ from the doctrine and discipline of the Church of England, I cannot given an unqualified assent.' He concludes: 'I might add some reasons of a private and personal nature which would preclude me from accepting the proposed honor in the capacity of Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of the County of York, but with which at this moment it would be unnecessary to trouble you'. The valediction has a studied formality: 'I have the honor to be | with feelings of great respect | your most obedient | and faithful Servant | Carlisle'.…

Prefatory TOC leaf for each month; not included in pagination. 8vo, signed in 4s. 10-1/4" x 6-1/4" This volume of the Metropolitan Magazine, which was edited by Marryat, contains the first US appearance of a number of Marryat & Howard titles."SNARLEYYOW; or, the Dog Fiend." - "The LIFE Of A SUB-EDITOR; or A Midshipman's Cruises." - "DIARY Of A BLASE." - "ARDENT TROUGHTON" - "The EXPIATION" and probably the most significant of all, in the August 1836 issue, first appears Marryat's famous MR. MIDSHIPMAN EASY, wherein, as a 'teaser', the first four chapters are published. The volume also contains the concluding portion of JAPHET IN SEARCH OF A FATHER, which had begun serialization in Nov 1834. While the Marryat and, to a lesser extent, Howard stories are, no doubt, the 'anchors' for this periodical, it includes many other interesting pieces on divers miscellaneous subjects- 'International Copyright Law', 'Mr. Willis's Penciling by the Way' ["severe" commentary on Nathaniel Willis, probably by Marryat], 'Slave Trade', 'The Life, Opinions, and Pensile Adventures of John Ketch", &c, &c. See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Dear Mr Paxton' and signed 'Morpeth'. Much of the letter comprises a twenty-three line quotation from a letter Morpeth has received 'from a great friend of mine in Dublin, Mr Hamilton' (After the transcription of Hamilton's letter Morpeth gives his name as 'William Tighe Hamilton Esqre [1807-1886] / Donnybrook / Dublin'. In his letter to Morpeth Hamilton boasts that he is 'a great collector of green-house and stone plants; I have now the largest Houses devoted to flowers in this country except at the Botanic Gardens'. He asks Morpeth if he could put in a word with Paxton regarding the the 'overflowings', 'chips and parings' of 'The Duke [of Devonshire]'s collection of Orchidaceous plants': 'It is only thus that humble people like myself can collect such plants, and perhaps I might be admitted to a share of the crumbs.' He ventures to ask this 'because I am a gardener, and gardeners are licensed beggars'. Morpeth would be pleased if Paxton could oblige Hamilton, but does not mean to 'ask any-thing that is indiscreet'. He ends: 'We have very variable weather here.'. …
