Condition: Very good. - Signature on a piece of vellum, approximately 1-3/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide, clipped from the close of a document. Signed "George Anson" beside his printed title "General, / Commander-in-Chief / East Indies". Together with an engraved portrait of Anson, 3-3/4 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide. There is a tiny area of soiling to the portrait's bottom edge. Very good. British army officer George Anson [1797-1857] was promoted to the rank of C in 1853. The following year he was appointed to the command of the Madras Army and in early 1856 became Commander-in-Chief in India. He caused resentment by his bias against the Indian Army and its sepoys. He was quoted as saying that he could never see a sepoy sentry "without turning away in disgust at his unsoldierlike appearance". Anson's appointment coincided with the tensions leading up to the Indian Mutiny of 1857. In May 1857, he sent troops to secure the arsenals in the Punjab. He intended to join the Meerut Brigade and to press on to retake Delhi, but four days into the march he died of cholera at the age of 59.

An einen Herren bzgl. des Obersten Costeau. - Cavaignac kämpfte gegen Abd el Kader in Algerien, war Gouverneur von Algier, wurde 1848 Divisionsgeneral und Kriegsminister. Im Juniaufstand war er Militärdiktator von Frankreich und wurde daraufhin von der Nationalversammlung zum Ministerpräsidenten gewählt. In der Präsidentenwahl desselben Jahres unterlag er jedoch Napoleon III.

Dwernicki erinnert sich mit Freude an die schönen Plätze Steyrs, und kann sich vorstellen, wie sehr diese seinen Freund H. Koller erleuchtet hatten. Außerdem entschuldigt sich Dwernicki, um den bei der Abfahrt von Steyr geborgten und noch geschuldeten Geldbetrag über das Bankiershaus André Cottié angefragt zu haben. ONE: On letterhead of 'The Ben Greet Company', addressed from 20 Buckingham Street, WC [ London ]. 14 July [ no year ]. 2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, aged and worn, with the first page carrying pencil scorings and a short note by Forsyth. The first paragraph reads: 'If business will permit can I have one of the small boxes for Monday night. You generally let me have something during the Season. I've been a very regular Gallery & Amphitheatre and stallite this season.' He continues: 'You've got a genius in Frau , & you sd keep her. Everyone is raving about her. I saw her as K last Bayreuth & I've heard her every night since she's sung here except Thursday when I unfortunately had some Pastorals at Ramsgate.' He realises that there is not likely to be 'an off night', but if there is, he should like a seat, adding: 'Please remember I am an ardent opera goer'. He ends with some illuminating comments on the state of Covent Garden, thanking him for having 'those shutters opened the difference was marvellous', and expressing a wish that 'the Syndicate wd only remove the awful spangles of fire or "electrify" them & back the 2/6 gallery'. These changes would be welcomed by 'their grateful public'. He concludes: 'Dont laugh at my managerial requirements!' TWO: 2 The Terrace, Camden Square. 17 August [no year]. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Headed with recipient's name: 'Neil Forsyth Esq'. Having just returned from America, he asks to be presented with four seats for that night: 'I want much to hear "Armida". If full up, never mind & I'm glad.' He announces that he is 'going to produce shortly in Chicago almost the earliest known opera one of Cesti's, circ 1606 [sic], Musical and Dramatic.' The letter concludes, referring to America: 'Things out there are very very faddy the Covent Garden Opera season seems to go on very steadily'.

Ficquelmont stammte aus einem alten lothringischen Adelsgeschlecht und trat zunächst in die österreichische Armee ein, wo er 1809 zum Obersten aufstieg und dann zum Generalstabschef der Armee des Erzherzogs Ferdinand von Este ernannt wurde. Er befehligte 1811 und 1812 drei Reiterregimenter gegen die Franzosen in Spanien. 1814 wurde Ficquelmont zum Generalmajor befördert, als der er 1815 die Kapitulation von Lyon zustande brachte. Nach dem Ende der Befreiungskriege war er in verschiedenen diplomatischen Missionen unterwegs. 1829 wurde er dann Botschafter in Sankt Petersburg und wurde der wichtigste Einflussfaktor der Metternichschen Politik auf den Zaren Nikolaus I. 1843 erfolgte die Beförderung zum General der Kavallerie und am 20. März 1848 übernahm Ficquelmont das Ministerium des Auswärtigen im ersten verantwortlichen Ministerium Kolowrat. Er wurde jedoch in der Folge als Angehöriger der Partei Metternichs und ausgewiesener Freund Russlands durch Demonstrationen zum Rücktritt gezwungen. Von diesem Zeitpunkt an lebte er in Wien und Venedig, wo er Soireen mit musikalischen Darbietungen und Rezitationen veranstaltete. - Der Empfänger des auf Französisch abgefassten Briefes ist Jacques (Jacob) Mislin (1807-1878). Der aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen stammende Mislin konnte dank seines Onkels an der berühmten Lehranstalt von Porrentruy im Schweizer Kanton Bern studieren, wo er nicht viel später auch selbst unterrichten sollte. Der 1830 zum Priester geweihte kath. Theologe wurde 1836 auf Vermittlung des Grafen von Bombelle an den Wiener Hof berufen, wo er einer der Lehrer der Söhne von Erzherzog Franz Karl und Erzherzogin Sophie wurde und damit sowohl den zukünftigen Kaiser Franz Joseph wie auch Erzherzog Ferdinand Maximilian (später Kaiser Max von Mexiko) unterrichtete (u.a. auch in Erdkunde). Vor der Revolution von 1848 unternahm Mislin eine Pilgerreise von Wien über Budapest und Konstantinopel nach Jersusalem. Der danach erschienene Reisebericht wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt und mehrfach nachgedruckt. In den folgenden Jahren leitete er die Bibliothek am Hof der Herzogin von Parma, Erzherzogin Marie Louise, wurde zum Abt von St. Maria von Deg (Ungarn), geheimer Kämmerer u. Hausprälat Papst Pius' XI., Apostolischer Pronotar, Kanoniker der Kathedrale von Großwardein, Träger zahlr. Orden (u.a. von Spanien, Parma u. des Ritterordens vom Heiligen Grab zu Jerusalem) sowie Mitglied zahlr. Akademien. Der Verfasser zahlr. Publikationen und Vertraute des belgischen Königs und des Grafen von Chambord blieb nach der Rückkehr von seiner Pilgerreise in Wien, wo er weiterhin in persönlichem Kontakt mit dem Kaiserhaus stand. - In einem numerierten, von Mislin eigenh. beschrifteten Papierumschlag.
