He was on the staff of Harvard's Arnold Arboretum from 1921 to 1948. He scientifically named a number of plant species. Several plant and fossil and one land mollusc are scientifically named for him. He spoke Latin fluently and wrote poetry in that language all his life but except for two titles all the published poems are in English.
