This is the 1980 First Edition of "On Mencken", which consists of essays by eight men who worked with or knew the great newspaper columnist, and professional curmudgeon, H. L. Mencken in one way or another. The essayists are William Manchester, Malcolm Moos, Huntington Cairns, William Nolte, Alistair Cooke, Carl Bode, Charles A. Fecher, Alfred A. Knopf. Published by Alfred A. Knopf, the book was edited by John Dorsey, who also wrote the Introduction. From the dust-jacket flap : "In essays celebrating the incomparable H. L. Mencken, on the centenary of his birth, eight distinguished writers and editors consider various aspects of the man and his work - telling of his life, his writings, his prejudices, his passions, and his profound influence on American letters in the first half of the Twentieth Century. --- The result is a book that offers much pleasure and new insights to Mencken's admirers, and that will serve, for anyone not familiar with him, as a fine introduction to one of the most colorful and memorable figures in modern Twentieth Century American letters." He married Beatrice Mai Benjamin on 17 November 1909, in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He immigrated to New York City, New York, United States in 1931 and lived in New York City, New York County, New York, United States in 1915 and Manhattan, New York.NY Times Nov. 21, 1919: The fact that Mr. and Mrs. William E. Benjamin are irreconcilable over the marriage of their daughter, the former Mrs. Alexander Dallas Bache Pratt, to Preston Gibson was made known in the Supreme Court yesterday when they filed suit to terminate the trust of $200,000 created by Mrs. Gibson for her children, Cynhia and Dallas Bache Pratt, 2d, under which they are to be maintained until they are of age, and after reaching their majority are to get the full income from the trust. The fund was created Dec. 27 last. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin say that their daughter married Preston Gibson on Oct. 17.Preston Gibson (1880-1937) was a prominent society figure and a playwright. The son of Randall L. Gibson, U.S. Senator and Representative of Louisiana, Gibson was extremely wealthy. Like his father, he attended Yale University, where he was a star athlete. Upon returning to the United States he enlisted in the Marines and broke records as a recruiting sergeant.Gibson was married and divorced four times: first to Minna Field (niece of Marshall Field and stepdaughter of Thomas Nelson Page), then to Grace McMillan Jarvis (granddaughter of U.S. Senator James McMillan), Beatrice Benjamin Pratt (daughter of the Boston publisher William Everts Benjamin and granddaughter of Henry H. Rogers of the Standard Oil Company), and finally to Evelyn Harris Spaulding. His multiple marriages caused a certain amount of scandal. He had three sons--Henry Field Gibson, James McMillan Gibson, and Henry Spaulding Gibson--and a daughter, Marie Preston Gibson. Gibson died at the age of 57 from heart disease.Provenance: Lt.-Col.
