Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book charts the fascinating historical journey of the John F. Slater Fund, a charitable trust established in 1882 by American industrialist John F. Slater. With a mission to uplift the lives of freed slaves and their descendants through education, the fund's creation was deeply rooted in the post-Civil War reconstruction era and the ongoing struggle for racial equality in the United States. The book delves into the complexities of the fund's administration, its strategies for promoting education among African Americans, and the challenges it faced amidst the social and political landscape of the time. Through the lens of original documents, including the founder's charter and correspondence, the author sheds light on the fund's evolution, its impact on educational institutions, and its enduring legacy in shaping the fight for social justice. Beyond its historical significance, this book explores the broader themes of philanthropy, education reform, and racial uplift, offering valuable insights into the complex relationship between education, equality, and the pursuit of a more just society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

[In] The Atlantic Monthly: A Magazine of Literature, Science, Art, and Politics. Volume XXXV. Boston: H. O. Houghton and Company; New York: Hurd and Houghton; Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1875. First Appearance. Octavo (8vo), 764 pp. Frontispiece. Contemporary half black morocco over marbled boards, with four raised bands and gilt spine titling; top edge tinted. Contains the first six installments of Mark Twain's seven-part Old Times on the Mississippi, published from January through June 1875; the concluding seventh installment appeared in August in Volume XXXVI. Drawn from Twain's experiences as a young Mississippi River steamboat pilot, the series recounts his apprenticeship, the exacting art of learning the river, and the distinctive culture and authority of the antebellum pilots. The material was subsequently incorporated and substantially expanded in Life on the Mississippi, published in 1883. Also contains the first six installments of Henry James's Roderick Hudson, which was serialized in twelve parts in The Atlantic Monthly from January through December 1875 before its first book edition. One of James's earliest major novels, it follows a gifted young American sculptor taken to Rome by the wealthy art patron Rowland Mallet, tracing the promise and eventual unraveling of Roderick's artistic career. Additional contributions include works by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and John Greenleaf Whittier. Provenance: Bookplate of George Franklin Danforth (1819-1899), prominent Rochester attorney and later Judge of the New York Court of Appeals (1879-1889), to front pastedown. Contents generally clean and unmarked. Binding remains sound and square. Moderate wear to the lower board edges, corners, and spine extremities. Leaf pp. 423-424 has a large chip to the upper portion, with loss affecting the upper lines of one installment of Roderick Hudson; because of this defect, the otherwise Very Good- volume is conservatively graded Good overall. He begins by thanking him for the photograph: 'Whenever I look on it - and I shall do so often - I shall be reminded of the fourth gentle poet who did all he could to make a few pleasant hours for a humble brother during his short sojourn in the great metropolitan maze of this England of ours'. Since his return from London he has been reading Sawyer's book ('Ten Miles from Town', 1866), 'and can feel my way into the heart of its sweet beauty much better here than I could possibly have done amid the turmoil of a city'. He quotes from the book, adding that he is 'content and cann better attune my ear to the melody of your tender verse'. He mentions one poem which 'interested us very much': 'all throughout the book there is such an under-flame of delicate feeling and sentiment that one is fain to stop that one may dream such happy dreams'. He would like to send him a photograph in return, but thinks that he will 'get a better one than I have from our friend Blanchard'. He concludes with his 'kind regards to Mrs Sawyer & dear Procter'.…
