Scrive Franz Borkenau di questo suo libro: «Credo che il presente volume rappresenti il primo tentativo di scrivere una storia coerente della politica comunista durante il periodo del Fronte popolare in Francia e durante la Seconda Guerra mondiale». (Egli firmava il suo lavoro nell'agosto 1951). E più oltre: « Per quanto concerne le fonti comuniste, il loro uso è necessario per illustrare, passo passo, i mutamenti nella linea del Partito. Ma l'utilità della letteratura comunista posteriore al 1935 è strettamente limitata a questo soltanto ». Ancora, citando Borkenau: « La difficoltà maggiore che si presenta a chiunque si accinga a scrivere un'opera sui problemi del comunismo, è l'atteggiamento da assumere nei confronti dei comunisti stessi; non parlo, si badi bene, di atteggiamento nei confronti del comunismo, che, nel mio caso, è di totale rifiuto. Ma vi sono due questioni da risolvere: fino a che punto lo studioso dei problemi comunisti deve tener conto della versione comunista della storia comunista, e fino a che punto deve cercare di convincere i comunisti del suo punto di vista?».
