Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. x+44+[4 publication list] pages with tables, appendix and cited references. Quarto (10 3/4" x 7 3/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Foreword by Clyde Kluckhohn. Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Volume XLII, Number 2. Reports of the Ramah project Number 6. First edition. Kaplan's monograph represents a unique contribution both to the cross-cultural study of personality and to that of values. For the latter subject the contribution is largely that of highly significant data. Members of the Values Project research team must carefully examine these materials as they bear upon the internalization of cultural values. They must give special attention to the wide variation in personality that Kaplan discovered in each of the four cultures. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped else very good.

Softcover. 106 p.; 21.5 cm. (Ecumenical studies in history ; 8) Contents: Foreword -- I. Unity and disunity on the frontier -- II. The desire for a national church -- III. The presuppositions of union -- IV. `Twixt the cup and the lip -- V. After the union -- VI. After the disruption -- VII. Towards further union -- VIII. The Canadian experience -- Index. -- `The act of union that inaugurated The United Church of Canada on June 10, 1925, may well be regarded by future historians as but one in a series of such events of which it was neither the first nor the last. The bodies taking part in it--the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the Methodist Church, the Congregational Churches of Canada and the General Council of Local Union Churches--were all the products of earlier amalgamations. So numerous were these, indeed, that one may too readily conclude that Canadian Church history has been marked by a constant trend towards union. In fact, tendencies to union and to division have been in constant tension, and more than once division and union have been intimately associated. Practically none of the early colonists came to Canada for religious reasons, and isolation and the lack of effective provision for pastoral care speedily dulled old denominational loyalties. To some of the frontiermen who settled in Upper Canada, with several generations of moves into the wilderness already behind them, old-country traditions had become very remote indeed. In these circumstances, the ecclesiastical allegiance of Canadians was determined less by ancestral inheritance than by the source of local leadership.' (p. 7) VG, sewn, in orig. green wrapper.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. SCROGGIE, Syd (1919-2006) [Poet], PHILLIPS, David [Editor], GIBSON, Colin (1907-1998) [Illustrator]. Give Me The Hills verse by Syd Scroggie. Dundee: David Winter & Son Ltd 1978. 1st Edition.72pp. Original staple saddle binding, with illustration on the front cover and photograph of the author on the rear. Near FIne. The first published works of one of Scotland's most extraordinary people. While serving in Italy during the Second World War, Scroggie was injured by a mine and lost his right leg and the sight in both eyes. Despite this, on his return from the war he continued to walk throughout the hills of Scotland, describing his blindness as "a sort of adventure". He is remembered by a cairn on Balluderon Hill in his beloved Sidlaw Hills. A rare honour for a living hill-walker, this was built in 2000, and Scroggie walked up the hill for the official unveiling, despite being aged 81 at the time. Even if you don't buy this collection of his poetry, we strongly recommend you visit the BBC archive Youtube page and watch the episode of Nationwide from 1971, which includes shots of him climbing in the Caingorms - it is uplifting and remarkable in equal measure. GIBSON, Colin (1907-1998) (illustrator).

Softcover. Condition: VG. Illustrated glossy cover. 142 pages : illustrations. Published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Brooklyn Museum./ Includes bibliographical references (pages 138-142). A compassionate realist in the tradition of Stephen Crane and Theodore Dreiser, Lewis Hine had the rare gift of being able to transcend the assignments he received as a documentary photographer by investing the most topical subject with lasting human quality. Seventy years after they were made, his Ellis Island pictures are still intensely moving: the newly arrived immigrants caught in all their bewilderment-- uncertain as to whether they will even be admitted to the promised land. How bitterly ironic that this artist and social reformer, after devoting his life to working people, should end up as so many of his subjects did-- on a welfare line. Decades earlier, he had written: "For many years I have followed the procession of child workers winding through a thousand industrial communities from the canneries of Maine to the fields of Texas. I have heard their tragic stories, watched their cramped lives, and seen their fruitless struggles in the industrial game where the odds are all against them." Like Walt Whitman before him, Lewis Hine viewed his work and art as grounded in the fluid movements of everyday lives, of history, the present and the future, expressing with vividness and responsiveness the hope for America revived in a sense of great community, and democracy as a life of free and enriching communion. Hine's dynamic images changed the way Americans looked at social conditions. Hine put his life on the line to capture a truthful picture of people at work. He risked physical attack in order to expose the brutal exploitation of child labor; then, years later, he had himself suspended from the hundredth floor of the Empire State Building to preserve on film the workers who were in the process of erecting it. Never content merely to depict labor's dehumanizing features, Hine shows us the dignity of work, the workers dominate the instruments of their labor-- the open hearths, mine pits, shovels, tongs and trolleys. Only a consummate camera-artist could have made such pictures, with their poignant qualities of light and shadow, their inescapable presence: all the more remarkable when we consider his cumbersome instrument-- a tripod-mounted 5 x 7 view camera with slides, flash pan, and powder.
