Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here is "George Borrow and His Circle" by Clement King Shorter, as published by Houghton Mifflin in 1913. This is the First U.S. Edition, hardcover format. It is illustrated with halftone photographs and facsimile reproductions of correspondence and title pages. George Borrow (1803 -… 1881), who was a natural linguist, spent a great deal of his time traveling by foot around Europe and other parts of the world. During his travels he became acquainted with the Romani people (Gypsies). These were sympathetically portrayed in two of his books which are semi-autobiographical fictions. Sympathetic portrayals of the Gypsies were rare at that time. "Lavengro" was the first book, and "Romany Rye" followed it closely. The two actually comprise one larger work. Borrow toured through Wales, having learned the language, and his account of travels through Wales in "Wild Wales" was sympathetic to the Welsh - another thing that was not common in the time. Borrow had traveled to Spain as a representative of the Bible Society, and the result was his famous book, "The Bible in Spain". Borrow wrote and published , also, dictionaries of the Romany language and an account of the Romani in Spain : "Zincali : Or, An Account of the Gypsies of Spain". He was a busy man . and a man ahead of his time - certainly a pioneer in compassionate regard for other cultures.
