8vo. xiii, [1], 229, [1] pp. 12 figs., index. Cloth, dust-jacket; jacket with a short tear. Very good. During the Depression, silicosis, an industrial lung disease, emerged as a national social crisis. Experts estimated that hundreds of thousands of workers were at risk of disease, disability, and death by inhaling silica in mines, foundries, and quarries. By the 1950s, however, silicosis was nearly forgotten by the media and health professionals. Asking what makes a health threat a public issue, David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz examine how a culture defines disease and how disease itself is understood at different moments in history. They also explore the interlocking relationships of public health, labor, business, and government to discuss who should assume responsibility for occupational disease.

Condition: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. PAUL EHRLICH AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF MODERN HEMATOLOGY. A substantial early twentieth-century treatise on diseases of the blood, bringing into English important German work by Paul Ehrlich, Adolf Lazarus, Carl von Noorden, and Felix Pinkus. The volume treats normal and pathological blood histology, anemia, chlorosis, and lymphatic and myeloid leukemia, with particular attention to the microscopic differentiation of blood cells. The American edition was edited and augmented by Alfred Stengel, Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Stengel's preface explains that the German authors were consulted concerning the English edition and that the American editors were asked to bring the articles up to date and adapt them for English-language readers. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: ILLUSTRATED HEMATOLOGY IN THE AGE OF THE MICROSCOPE. +++ Publisher's burgundy cloth, blind-ruled boards, with gilt lettering, rules, ornaments, and Saunders device to the spine. +++ Octavo, approximately 25 cm tall. 714 pages, followed by additional publisher's material. +++ Illustrated with text figures and 13 full-page plates, five in color, depicting blood morphology and pathological specimens. The color plates reproduce stained microscopic preparations and are accompanied by explanatory text. Contemporary Saunders advertising confirms the complement of 13 plates, five in color. +++ Edited with additions by Alfred Stengel, M.D.; authorized translation from the German under his editorial supervision. From Nothnagel's Encyclopedia of Practical Medicine. +++ Contents include: Histology of the Blood, Normal and Pathologic, by Ehrlich and Lazarus; Clinical Features of Anemia, by Lazarus; Chlorosis, by von Noorden; Lymphatic Leukemia, by Pinkus; and Myeloid Leukemia, by Lazarus. Bibliographical references under 'Literature' appear at the end of individual sections; index, pp. 683-714. These bibliographical details correspond with institutional records for the 1905 edition. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and square; text clean with light, even age-toning. Light shelf-handling wear, with rubbing and light wear at the spine ends and tips and a slight longitudinal crease to the spine. Small light spot to the upper front board. Gilt remains clear and attractive. Plates and illustrations remain well preserved. SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: BLOOD CELLS BECOME DIAGNOSTIC EVIDENCE. Diseases of the Blood appeared during a formative period in hematology, when advances in microscopy and staining techniques were transforming the classification of blood cells and the diagnosis of blood disorders. The text explicitly discusses the differentiation of leukocytes through stained preparations and the classification associated with Ehrlich. Paul Ehrlich was central to this transformation. His investigations of selective staining and blood-cell morphology helped establish methods by which different leukocyte populations could be distinguished microscopically. This volume brought Ehrlich and his German colleagues' work on blood morphology and disease to an American medical readership in a substantial English-language clinical reference. FROM GERMAN RESEARCH TO AMERICAN MEDICINE: The book also documents the international movement of medical knowledge at the beginning of the twentieth century. Rather than simply reprinting a translation, the American Nothnagel series employed specialists to edit and supplement the German articles for English-speaking physicians. Stengel's 1905 preface specifically describes that editorial process, while contemporary medical publishing records list the volume as a 714-page illustrated treatment of anemia, chlorosis, leukemia, and related blood diseases. GENRES: Medical History, Hematology, Scientific Literature, Medical Reference, Pathology, Illustrated Medical Books SUBJECTS: Paul Ehrlich, Adolf Lazarus, Carl von Noorden, Felix Pinkus, Alfred Stengel, Hematology, Blood Diseases, Anemia, Leukemia, Chlorosis, Blood Cell Morphology, Leukocytes, Histology, Microscopy, Medical Illustration, Nothnagel's Practice, University of Pennsylvania, History of Medicine.…
