Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. xv+150 pages with bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition. In the last two decades of his life Jeremy Bentham became interested in molding Spanish America into the ideal model of his utilitarian thought. To achieve the goal, Bentham twice attempted to immigrate to the New World. He then turned to his pen to shape the development of South America. In her study, Miriam Williford discusses why Jeremy Bentham chose South American as his opportunity to effect a comprehensive political code and considers the result of "his intense desire to see the law of the land not only written but complete and systematized." Such a code--drawn up by Bentham--assured proper development for these lands whose independence from Spain he sought. He advocated a free press and instructed his readers on needed educational reforms--from the use of the Lancaster method to the proper choice of books for libraries. He alos planned an inter-oceanic canal that remarkably resembled the Panama Canal. This work reveals many unknown and unpublished documents that include the special laws, plans, codes and recommendations that Bentham drafted in hopes of realizing his Utopian dream in Spanish Ultramaria. As Williford demonstrates, the communication between the Light of Westminster and the struggling Spanish American states reveals much of interest about present-day politics and emerging countries. DAW Books No. 345; UE1475; PBO: Paperback Original 1st Ed; 7/1979; Printed in Canada; 317 Pages; Tony Roberts painted cover; ** Goodreads; There was only one way to reach Iola where an interstellar distress signal had originated. For Iola belonged to a small group of stars cut off from the rest of the galaxy by the close presence of an all-enveloping black hole. The only way to reach Iola was through that timeless-spaceless cosmic warp. Klaus Heller answered that call. He leapt, clad in a special self-sustaining spacesuit, through the black hole. He returned to the world intact, silent, and secretive. And was found murdered where none could have reached him. Ian Wallace's new novel is a combination of scientific paradox, social innovation, and super detection. Meet Claudine St. Cyr, future sleuth extraordinary, and meet again the mastermind Croyd. Confront with them the murder of a hero, the strange doom of his sister, and the plotted assassination of an entire planet.>>> Cover creasing; spine slant; Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Book.
