Namur was a French painter, drawer and illustrator who realized portraits and landscapes. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Valenciennes, then in Paris at the Académie Julian. Text by Maurice Toesca relating to Jean Paulhan, printed on Victor Michel's Presses des Fils. Vignette and large full-page burin portrait by A. Krol, intaglio printed by Pierre Thirot. Rare, edition limited to 30 copies only; no. 16 signed by the author, artist and printer, with an inscription from the artist under the vignette to the famous art writer Claude ROGER-MARX.Maurice Toesca is known for Les amours de la belle époque (1979), Les amours des années folles (1980) and Les amours romantiques (1983).Krol was born in Poland in 1919 and in 1938 settled in France in order to continue his studies to become a civil engineer. With the outbreak of war in 1939 he enlisted in the Foreign Legion and settled in Avignon. He worked as a mechanic in a garage and took Sunday sculpture lessons at the Ecole des Beaux Arts there. His involvement with painting began in 1943. He worked with the engraver Joseph Hecht. His first solo exhibition was held in 1949. He won many distinctions and in 1960 was invited to the Venice Biennale. He is known for his illustrations of literary and poetic publications. He has engraved approximately thirty medals for the Paris Mint. He is also involved with the decoration of public buildings and tapestry design.Provenance: Estate of Emmanuel Navon.Passed away in Walnut Creek, January 30, 2004 at the age of 109. Father of Monique (Stanley) Schonberger and Daniel Navon; grandfather of Steven and Robert Schonberger; great-grandfather of Alex and Ella-Rose Schonberger, uncle of Anita Navon. He was born in Constantinople, Turkey into a distinguished family of scholars, moved to Paris in the 1920s and established his own business. He survived World War II in occupied France. He moved to California in 1956 and opened the "Paris Art Gallery" in San Francisco. He retired to Rossmoor at age 90. His last years were comforted by the devoted care of Charlotte Amato. He was known for his intellect, his knowledge of many languages and his love of art and music. At his request, no memorial services will be held.
