Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. This is the "Format De Luxe" Folio edition, Volume One only (of four), 9-3/4 X 12-1/2 inches in dark blue leather boards with gilt rules, top edge gilt. Internal text block remains lovely and firmly bound, each detailed color plate (of which 39 are indexed for this volume) still protected b…y tissue guard bearing caption. This volume covers the Corvidae (Crows and Jays), the Icteridae (Troupials, American Starlings, and Orioles), the Fringillidae (Sparrows, Towhees, and Grosbeaks), the Tanagridae (Tanagers), Mniotiltidae (Wood Warblers), and the Hirundinidae (Swallows.) INNER hinges secured with what appears to be strips of blue library cloth tape. The problem is the OUTER hinges where boards attach to the leather spine covering are well-worn and loosening. All still holding together for now, but boards will have to better secured to spine if this copy is to see any substantial future use. Carries the hand-written signature of author W. Leon Dawson of Santa Barbara, 1873-1928, the renowned American ornithologist, author, and lecturer. He authored several books on ornithology, including this one as well as "Birds of Ohio: A Complete Scientific and Popular Description of the 320 Species." Originally "Sold only by subscription" and dedicated to Ellen Browning Scripps. This large volume weighs 10 lbs. Shipping is likely to cost extra. We decline to ship this one outside the U.S. as shipping cost would likely be absurd. Reduced from $340. Original 4 volumes Illustrated by 30 color Photogravures, 120 full-page duotone plates and more than 1100 halftone cuts of birds in life, nests, eggs, and favorite haunts, from photographs / the 39 full-page color plates here chiefly by Major Allan Brooks (illustrator).
