FIRST EDITION, pp. 240, crown 8vo, original maroon cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt with a hint of fading at tips, free endpapers a little browned, dustjacket with a superb design by John Craxton, a little chipped nicked and rubbed, very good. Inscribed by the author in the month of publication: 'To Mrs Henson, with the author's respectful compliments, A.M. Rendel, 14.7.53' The author, educated at Rugby School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, was an S.O.E. agent in Crete during the Second World War - where he served alongside Patrick Leigh Fermor and W. Stanley Moss, both of whom are mentioned recurrently in his account. The endpaper map is sometimes seen to the verso of the flyleaf; we assume - and this is corroborated by the inscription at time of publication - that the version here, with the same map to the front pastedown, is the earlier issue.
