Ca 1875. Photograph with printed caption. Verso with 23 line description of the hotel, as well as, underneath, an 11 line plug for "C. E. Watkins' Yosemite Art Gallery". Printed, in red, vertical note to verso left side: "Carriages and Buggies Hired at Half the Rates of San Francisco." Recto with albument photograph of the hotel. Card: 3-1/4" x 5". Photo: 2-3/4" x 4-5/8" "Oaklandâs first large hotel, the Grand Central, at 12th Street from Webster to Harrison, was built in 1872 and destroyed by a fire which started on March 9th, 1880 . It was designed and originally co-owned by Samuel Merritt and Captain P. S. Wilcox, The 1874 Oakland City directory called the building one of the most expensive in the city. Covering a full city block, the building was in the style of Italian architecture with a Mansard roof, and was 4 stories high with 3 towers (probably above these 4 stories). A porch led from each entrance all the way to the sidewalk, making dismounting from carriages convenient even in rain or sun. âThe vestibule at the main entrance has a tesselated flooring of artificial marble. The ceiling rises eighteen feet in the clear. Laurel, oak, and walnut are represented in the graining, which has been executed with considerable care.â Other modern features included an elevator and telegraph office, and suites were available in addition to private rooms." [Oakland Wiki] Watkins is, of course, one of the seminal names in mid-19th C. western photography. This trade card hales from just before Watkins lost his gallery, "apparently after defaulting on a loan from his financial backer, J. J. Cook" who then sold the materials to Isiah West Taber. Cf. Palmquist, PIONEER PHOTOGRAPHERS, p. 581. We find only one OCLC holding of this Watkin's trade card, at the Bancroft. Curiously enough, the extensive Carleton Watkins website, devoted to the photographer's life & body of work [including ephemera & trade cards], does not list the item. Rare. Some age-toning to card. Minor fading to the photograph. Overall, a VG survivor. Now housed in a clear mylar holder.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Galland, Pierre Victor (1822-1892) - 'French 19th century Tiepolo'Photograph album containing 28 mounted albumen prints of allegorical paintings by the artist for the Galerie des Metiers in the Paris Town Hall (1888-1891). The prints executed by a commercial photographer of the period show 2 decorative portals (133 x 271mm), 18 paintings (182 x 271mm) representing the various arts and crafts, sciences, trade, industry, and agriculture (all are signed and dated 'P.V. Galland 1891'), and 8 emblematic female figures (260 x 280) symbolizing these subjects. The album in large oblong quarto consists of a total of 24 thick paper boards, edges gilt, 9 of which remain blank. Contemporary half morocco, rubbed. Period documentation of the paintings in the Galerie des Métiers, considered the most important official commission by this influential decorative artist. The album appears to have been prepared as a pattern book for craftsmen and decorators. The paintings for the Paris Town Hall are rated among the most important works by this influential decorative artist. Galland (1822-1892) was also noted for his contributions to the Paris Pantheon, the Palais de l'Elysée, the Vanderbilt mansion in New York, and the Narishkin Palace in St Petersburg. He was a prolific and versatile artist, who mostly however carried out private commissions. Galland taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts from 1873; he became artistic director of the Gobelin factory in 1877. The magnificent tapestries which he designed for the Elysée Palace (1854-8), as well as his paintings at St Cloud, were destroyed by the Commune. See Henry Havard, 'L'Oeuvre de P.-V. Galland', Paris, 1895; also, Vachon, 'L'Hotel de Ville de Paris (1905), p.183ff. From the library of the eminent British stained glass revivalist firm Clayton Bell with their bookplate.

Good. Some scuffing and light foxing. Actual size of photo is 8.5 x 11 in. Size 14 x 17 Inches. A c. 1861 Wilhelm Hammerschmidt albumen silver print from a glass negative depicting the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), Giza, Egypt. The image looks on the images from a point on the Nile - likely during a high-water period. In the midground, a group lounges near stone rubble, possibly a small ruin. This image is number 181 from Hammerschmidt's corpus. Great Pyramid of Khufu The Great Pyramid of Khufu, also known as the Pyramid of Cheops, is the largest and most famous of the pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex, Egypt. Built as a tomb for the IV Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu around 2580-2560 BC, it is a marvel of ancient engineering and architectural genius. Constructed from approximately 2.3 million blocks of stone, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons, the pyramid originally stood at 146.6 meters (481 feet), although it now measures around 138.8 meters (455 feet) due to the loss of the outer casing stones. The precise methods used in its construction remain a subject of research and debate. The Great Pyramid was originally covered with casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. It was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Provenance These images were from the collections of Roswell Dwight Hitchcock (1817 - 1887). Hitchcock was a congregationalist minister and professor at Bowdoin and later at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. His ministry took him to Germany in the 1840s. Afterwards, he visited Italy and Greece in 1866; and in 1869 and 1870 he traveled to Egypt and Palestine. He was appointed president of the American Palestine Exploration Society in 1871, and vice-president of the American Geographical Society in 1880. Whether he acquired these before traveling to Egypt, there, or on his way back to America, is unknown. Publication History and Census Scarce. Good. Some scuffing. Actual size of photo is 8.5 x 11 in. Size 14 x 17 Inches. This is a c. 1860 Antonio Beato albumen silver print from a glass negative depicting Cleopatra's Needle, Alexandria, Egypt. Here the obelisk is photographed in Alexandria, with surrounding construction and several lounging Egyptians, before it was gifted to the city of New York by the Khedive of Egypt in 1877. This famous obelisk now stands in New York's Central Park. This image has copious annotations in the lower margins, some of which must have been added decades after the photo was acquired - clearly indicating a lingering fascination with the monument. New York Cleopatra's Needle The New York Cleopatra's Needle, a red granite Egyptian obelisk originally erected in Heliopolis around 1450 BC by Pharaoh Thutmose III and later inscribed by Ramses II, today stands in Central Park. Gifted to the United States by the Khedive of Egypt, Isma'il Pasha, in 1877 as a diplomatic gesture, it journeyed to New York in 1880 and was erected in 1881, a testament to ancient engineering prowess. Approximately 69 feet tall and weighing around 200 tons, its hieroglyphic inscriptions celebrate the pharaohs' military triumphs and divine status. Today, it faces preservation challenges due to weathering and pollution. It is one of three obelisks referred to as 'Cleopatra's Needle', the others being in London and Paris. Provenance These images were from the collections of Roswell Dwight Hitchcock (1817 - 1887). Hitchcock was a congregationalist minister and professor at Bowdoin and later at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. His ministry took him to Germany in the 1840s. While Beato took several photos of Cleopatra's Needle, this is the only example of the present image we have identified.

This is a c. 1860 Antonio Beato albumen silver print from a glass negative depicting the Colossi of Memnon, Thebes, Egypt. The great statues of Amenhotep III dominate the images, with an ancient temple in the background. Egyptians stand near each statue, likely intended to provide scale to the 50-foot-high monuments. The owner of the photograph seems to have been particularly fascinated with them and has jotted notes below the image. Hong Kong n.d. ca. 1875, n.p. A very large b. w. album photo photo size: 64.3 x 21.3 cm., mounted on boards 67.3 cx 25.6 cm., very good, some minor fading in the center, folded in the center with cotton tape on the verso, no major defects. . *** **** *** . . RARE AND EARLY PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH OF . . . HONG KONG CIRCA [1875] . . . * This is a very RARE and quite early panoramic view of Hong Kong Island. . *** The photograph was taken from Kowloon across the harbor showing the outline of the mountains, the peak and the city of Victoria [central area], with the waterfront, and center left is the anchorage and Wanchai. A large sailing brig is at anchor just near Wanchai. . *** THE PHOTOGRAPH: The photograph is composed of three photographs, aligned and laid down on a stiff board. The center has a vertical cut to the photographs, and folds backwards with a cotton tape supporting the two halves. At some earlier time when the photographs were laid down, their appears to have been another cotton tape on the recto over which the photographs were affixed. That tape has broken, thus leaving the folded photos to be separated now. This is normal for very large panoramic photographs of this early period. . *** THE COLOR OF THE IMAGES: The three photographs were taken with a panoramic type camera, that actually took a large width photograph. After taking three such photographs, the photographer mounted the three photos by aligning one over the other then gluing them down on the stiff board. It is therefore necessarily true that each photograph was taken consecutively, but due to the chemical developing process, ambient temperature, time of day and differences of exposures, and other physical factors, each photograph has a slight variation in color and density so that they are not perfectly matched, which was the norm of the period of the 1870's photography. . *** THE IMAGES: Each image is exceptionally clear, save for the far right image has a small skiff in motion and is blurry, otherwise all photos are clear, with strong images and little fading. The center photograph was taken with some different setting or at a different time of day and is therefore somewhat less dense in color, but is nevertheless still sharp and clear. The photo at the far left was also taken at a different time of day, perhaps in the late afternoon as it is darker the the others. All of this is entirely normal for panoramic photographs. . *** CONDITION: The photos are all in very good or better condition, as issued, with albumen surface which is quite intact. There are a few very small spots at the upper area or the sky, these are not greatly distracting or obvious. . The mat board has a few small & old foxing spots, and a slight wave to the board but the wave matches when the two parts are folded face to face. It was very common for leaves of photo albums of this period to have this sort of form. The edges are gilt and it is likely this photo was removed from some center hinged photo album. . This photo was meant to be folded in the center from day one. There is a small flaw in the negative in the far right photograph which is unknown but not something that happened after the photos were mounted. By and large these are excellent photographs, no fading. If there was any fading, it would be an overall issue. Otherwise a strong image. . *** THE VERSO: The verso has four albumen photographs: [from the left]: . 1. A large image of what can be India or that area, showing people wearing Sarongs, 27 x 18.5 cm. very clean sharp image. This view shows a number of people surrounded very very tall bamboo thickets and a road paved with stones leading down to the water. The water appears to be a very slow-moving river with no current whatsoever. . 2. Unidentified location, a waterfront on the water, with "Eastern Telegraph Co." [a British firm established 1860] at the left, Frank Azzopardi & Co., Ship Chandlers & Stevedores, 21.3 x 16.8, very good, solid image, with s touch of ha.
