The moment precedes Affre's fateful intervention at the barricades during the June Days uprising. Plate 2: Archbishop Affre stands atop a barricade, arms raised, speaking to a crowd of armed workers and wounded insurgents, while soldiers look on. He is accompanied by a man holding a branch of peace. Behind, smoke rises as fighting continues in the background. Plate 3: Archbishop Affre is shown receiving the last rites in a domestic room. A priest holds a ciborium while several clergy and lay figures kneel or watch in grief. Blood-stained linens lie nearby, and the setting is deeply intimate, with emotional figures and religious decor. Plate 4: Archbishop Affre lies on his deathbed surrounded by mourning clergy and civilians. Several kneel in prayer; others stand solemnly.
