Mittels der neuen UML-Notation wird gezeigt, wie ein objektorientiertes Analysemodell erstellt und dann durch eine objektorientierte Benutzungsoberfläche visualisiert wird. Anhand von Entwurfsmustern wird die Erstellung eines standardisierten objektorientierten Entwurfs beschrieben. Weitere Entwurfsthemen sind die Anbindung von Anwendungen an eine objektorientierte Datenbank sowie die objekt-relationale Abbildung, um die Vorteile der Objektorientierung für relationale Datenbanken zu nutzen. Die Autorin legt dabei einerseits Wert auf eine präzise Trennung von Analyse und Entwurf, und betont andererseits die problemlose Durchgängigkeit von der Analyse bis zum Entwurf. Praktische Exkurse (auf der CD-ROM) erleichtern den Übergang zur Softwareentwicklung am Computer. Sie zeigen an Beispielprogrammen, wie mit einem GUI-System zunächst die Benutzungsoberfläche und dann die Datenverwaltung mit einer objektorientierten Datenbank erstellt und im dritten Schritt die Systeme in einer Drei-Schichten-Architektur verbunden werden. Kapitel über den Einsatz von CASE-Tools für die objektorientierte Entwicklung, eine Kurzbeschreibung verschiedener OOA/D-Konzepte, Checklisten und der Vergleich bisher gängiger Notationen (Rumbaugh, Coad) mit der UML runden das Themenspektrum ab. Ein umfangreiches Glossar, kommentierte Literaturhinweise und ein Index machen den Einsatz auch als Nachschlagewerk möglich. Von besonderem Wert ist die beigefügte CD-ROM, auf der außer Tools zur objektorientierten Analyse und Entwurf zahlreiche Beispiele, die Lösungen der Übungsaufgaben und drei Exkurse enthalten sind. Ich habe mir das Buch gekauft, um einen Einblick in das komplexe Thema der Objektmodellierung zu bekommen. Aber das Buch kann deutlich mehr. Zusätzlich zu den reinen Arbeitstechniken wird die neue Denkweise beschrieben, mit der man an objektorientierte Programmierung herangehen sollte. Ich gebe diesem Buch daher die Bestnote.
