En 1952 Elio Vittorini le publica los cuentos I ventitrè giorni della città di Alba para Einaudi. Tibiamente acogidas por la crítica su traducción de la Balada del viejo marino de Coleridge y su novela corta La malora, publica en 1959 la novela Primavera di bellezza (premio Prato en 1960). En 1962 recoge el premio Alpi Apuane por el cuento Ma il mio amore è Paco. En la noche del 17 al 18 de febrero de 1963 fallece en Turín de un cáncer de pulmón. En el mismo 1963 aparece Una questione privata, al decir del crítico Giulio Ferroni «la obra más perfecta y más lograda de Beppe Fenoglio».
