On the reverse are part of the lyrics from two songs, the second being 'Short'nin' bread'.

Tidrick, Kathryn [Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi ( 2 October 1869 - 30 January 1948) was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled", "venerable") applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa is now used worldwide. In India, he is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father", "papa") and Gandhiji. He is unofficially called the Father of the Nation].

Lawrence Guyot graduated from Tougaloo, a private HBCU in Mississippi, with a degree in biology and chemistry in 1963. He was a civil rights leader and director of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) in 1964. Through his work with the MFDP and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee he was able to help work on the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Signed vintage photograph, showing Martin Luther King standing outdoors in a profile half length pose addressing a predominantly African-American crowd who are gathered before him: "To Ray - God bless you in our struggle for freedom and human dignity. Martin Luther King Jr.". - A pencil annotation to the reverse by… an unidentified hand (although evidently that of the original recipient of the photograph) states that the photograph was captured in Los Angeles in October 1964 and further indicates that the signature was obtained in-person at the Riverside Church in New York City on 4 April 1967. Martin Luther King Jr. made a whistle stop tour of Los Angeles on 27 October 1964 when he delivered a series of speeches (or "pleas" as he described them himself) encouraging people to vote in the upcoming Presidential election, and the present photograph was captured at one such speech. King made it clear that he would not be voting for Barry Goldwater, but did not endorse any particular candidate, instead urging his audiences to go to the polls and vote for their convictions. On 4 April 1967, when the present photograph was signed, King made what has been documented as "the most controversial speech" of his career, and also the one he "laboured over most", and is known as the Riverside Church speech, or "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence". Coincidentally the speech was delivered exactly a year before King would be assassinated by James Earl Ray. - Some mild creasing and a few small tears to the edges of the image (repaired with tape to the reverse) not affecting the signature or inscription, overall in fine condition.

Autograph Note Signed, "Bro Malcolm," to Roy Munford, on a postcard: "As Salaam Alaikum, Greetings from Battle Creek. This Teaching is fast-spreading everywhere." On verso i…s a photograph showing the entrance to the Youth Building in the Irving Park neighborhood of Battle Creek, MI. On January 24, 1965, just weeks before being murdered, Malcolm X delivered a speech in Harlem in which he encouraged a critical review of the narrative surrounding America's "founding fathers," picking out Thomas Jefferson as being especially worthy of condemnation by pointing out that his believing in the words he authored--"all men are created equal"--while owning slaves, implied that he did not intend those words to apply to the enslaved. Because of this hypocrisy, Malcolm X said, African-Americans should look upon Jefferson with the same contempt he showed them. Malcolm X on Afro-American History (1965).

"This is just a note to acknowledge receipt of your very kind letter of recent date. Your letter is very helpful and is of inestimable value in the continuance of my humble e…ffort. It was very kind of you to take the time to write" The son of a minister, King studied theology before joining the ministry and, simultaneously, fighting for civil rights. His leadership during the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, and subsequent bombing of his home, brought him into national prominence. As the head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, King advocated for non-violent resistance to end Birmingham, Alabama's racist policies and led the historic March on Washington on August 28, 1963. The demonstration's highpoint was King's celebrated "I Have a Dream" speech that set the stage for his selection as Time magazine's 1963 "Man of the Year." In October 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize, making him at age 35 - its youngest recipient up to that time. In March 1965, King led the famous march from Montgomery to Selma to bring attention to the ongoing problem of segregation, despite the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. Written while King was co-pastor of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Rare vintage glossy photograph of King sitting in a half profile pose to his left in a sharp suit and tie, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "Best Wishes to Mr. & Mrs. Ken Browne, From Martin L. King."…Reverse bears the photographer's credit stamp of Arthur Freeman of Montgomery, Alabama, and a typed collector's notation indicating that the autograph was received in 1957. In very good to fine condition, with a few creases, two paperclip impressions (one to the top, the other to the upper right edge), surface impressions across King's forehead from typed notations on the reverse, and somewhat irregular ink adhesion to portions of the signature. Photographs signed by King are extremely rare and desirable.
