The Joy of Quilting; by Laurie Swim; introduction by Alex Colville; Viking/Penguin Books Canada Ltd., Markham ON, 1984. Laurie Swim (born 1949) is a Canadian visual artist, best known for her quilt art. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the New York Museum of Arts and Design, the Nova Scotia Art Bank, the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council, the Ontario Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, and in private collections. She won the Portia White Prize in 2013. Swim was born in Lockeport, Nova Scotia, Canada and grew up in Nova Scotia. She studied painting at Mount Allison University and NSCAD University (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design) where she graduated 1972, before apprenticing with Danish designers Lisbeth Have and Annette Juel. She returned to Nova Scotia in 1975 but moved to Toronto, Ontario, in 1978, making art quilts for corporate and private collections. In 2004 she established The Art Quilt Gallery of the Atlantic, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. From the blurb - In The Joy of Quilting, Laurie Swim freely shares her techniques and ideas, including detailed patterns and directions for 25 appealing projects. She takes you step by step through the creative process. From Alex Colville's introduction - I first saw Laurie Swim's work in 1976 when I was a judge at the Nova Scotia Designer Craftsman Exhibition. I have been alive for a long time and I do not have exaggerated expectations; I was astonished and deeply affected when I saw her "Eve's Apple" - reproduced for the dust jacket of this book. Clearly, I think her work is extraordinarily good. People who do something really well are usually good at explaining what they do and how they do it. This is a book by a gifted artist who is also accomplished at telling you how she does it - and how you can do it too. This book, 95 pages, is in near-fine condition. All that keeps it from being fine is the slightest discolouration on the top of the pages and a strange mark on the inside cover that looks like a bird head. The dust jacket is in fine condition and is enclosed in a protective mylar wrap.
