First edition. Lieutenant-Colonel Denis Russell-Roberts was an Indian Army officer who was present at the fall of Singapore. This narrative of his wartime experiences captures the shock of the British defeat, the day-to-day struggles of internees, moments of levity, and the personal costs of the conflict in Asia. His wife, Ruth, died in January 1945 in a prison camp in Indonesia. In the preface, he specially mentions a "sergeant pilot of the Japanese Air Force who was in charge of my party on the aerodrome at Changi in the autumn of 1944. It was through this man's humanity and courage that the one letter I was able to send to Ruth during those years in separate prison camps reached her in January, 1945. Ten months' exhaustive enquiry through the Japanese Defence Department in Tokyo has led to the conclusion that he was killed in battle at some date in 1945. I salute his memory." Octavo. With 16 half-tone plates (1 folding), full-page maps in text. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in red. With dust jacket illustrated by Ronald Searle. Spine lightly creased and bumped, rear free endpaper creased; jacket clipped, mark on front panel. creasing and a few nicks: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Brian, with every good wish, Denis Russell-Roberts." The author describes his experiences of the Malaya Campaign, beginning with the preparation of defences in late 1941 and ending with the fall of Singapore and his internment in Changi POW camp. This work is the much scarcer forerunner to Spotlight on Singapore, published by Russell-Roberts in 1965. We have traced only six institutional copies: Imperial War Museum, Oxford, Cornell, State Library of New South Wales, National Library of Singapore, and National Library of Malaysia. The recipient, the historian Brian Harrison, held academic appointments in Malaya and Hong Kong and wrote an enduring history of south-east Asia. Square octavo. Sketch maps in text. Original purple cloth, front cover lettered in gilt. Contemporary pencilled note one final blank. Boards stained, gilt tarnished, marks on pp. 146-7: good only.
