The book elaborates on the apartment building in comparison to a homestead, weighs plusses and minuses, provides a critical view of architectural plans and regulations, contractors, architects and effects of their mistakes, and elaborates on the reasons while offering alternatives. The second to last chapter expounds on the quality of the various forms of appartment buildings with suggestions on the value and advantage of block buildings. Gessner was one of the first architects was one of the first architects focusing on the design of apartment buildings. In this book he introduces innovative alternatives while criticizing the bad examples of the past. Gessner is noted for the design and development of apartment buildings in major cities.
