Wir aIle kennen Angst und erfahren sie Higlich bei unseren Patienten. Wir glauben daher meist auch zu wissen, was Angst ist. So scheinen AuBe rungen wie 'ich habe Angst' oder 'mich iiberfallt Angst' eindeutig und fUr je den verstandlich zu sein. Die Angst wird gleichsam personifiziert erlebt. Fragen wir jedoch genauer, wie sich die Angst sowohl individuell als auch kollektiv auBert, so stehen wir vor erheblichen Schwierigkeiten, die Vielfalt v. a. der psycho-physischen und sozialen Ausdrucksformen der Angst zu erfassen und zu objektivieren. Fragen wir, wovor Angst empfunden wird, so fallt auf, daB das Verstandnis Angsten und deren angenommenen Ursachen gegeniiber sehr unterschiedlich sein kann. Goetze studierte an den Kunstakademien und Universitäten Leipzig und München und ließ sich 1899 als Portraitmaler und Graphiker in Berlin nieder. Seit 1893 beschickte er regelmäßig die großen nationalen Ausstellungen" (DBE) und wurde vor allem als Portraitist (u. a. Frh. von Richthofen, Gertrud Bäumer, Rudolf Steiner, Arno Holz) bekannt" (ebd.). Auf der Bugra (Leipzig 1914) wurde ihm der Sächsische Staatspreis verliehen; von ihm stammen auch die Illustrationen zu Barbey d'Aurevillys Der rote Vorhang" (Leipzig u. a., 1923).

The flexible portfolio/folder is bound in padded covers with a gold, black & brown, tiger-striped leather covering, with a mounted black leather cartouche label, gold-stamped with title, on front cover, with twisted, black silk & gold-colored metallic wire ties, ending in black silk swags; interior of portfolio & flaps are lined with a golden-tan silk. This portfolio contains an engraved "title" plate with NGL flag, quotation (as given below), and 12 Otto Goetze etchings, each signed in the plate & printed in a brown-toned ink on a thick paper; each sheet bearing the North German Lloyd, NGL embossed monogram & flag in the left lower corner of the sheet; each sheet has a loose, glazed onion-skin tissue guard (these have tanned, but without transferring to the images). Lower, inner surface of silk-covered flap shows a few pen marks; first (quotation) plate shows a few tan spots, creasing to upper left-hand edge, second plate shows small bend to upper left corner; some slight age-tanning to paper. Overall, portfolio & plates are in fine condition. Undetermined as to how many of these portfolios were produced, or how many plates were originally in them. "An E. T. Henschler (wohl Bruder von Johann Jakob H., Lehrer in Riga) in Leipzig mit der Bitte, für ihn einen Verleger seiner russischen Volkslieder zu suchen. Er unterbreitet ihm folgende Fragen: "[?] Zu gleicher Zeit wünsche ich zu wissen. 1) was wohl ein Bogen [?] zu etwa 1200 Ex. in Leipzig zu drucken kostet? und zwar 1), wenn 1000 auf Schreibpapier u. etwa 200 auf Velinpapier u. 2) wenn etwa 700 auf Druckpapier, 400 auf Schreibpapier u. 100 auf Velinpapier sind. 2) was eine kleine einfache Vignette, wie etwa zu dem Liede No. 1. (Russ. Jüngling landschaftliche Gruppirungen) in Kupfer zu stechen kosten würde? 3) Ob sich wohl ein Corrector für den russischen Text fände [?]. Beifolgende Gedichte als Proben aus dem angeführten Werke lassen Sie gefälligst in ein gelesenes Journal, als das Morgenblatt oder die Zeitung für die elegante Welt einrücken. [?]" Beiliegend sein vierseitiges Manuskript zu dem Prospekt für sein geplantes Buch: "Stimmen des russischen Volks. Herausg. Peter v. Goetze. Den Herausgeber hat vorzüglich die Herdersche Ansicht geleitet, Er ist vielleicht noch weiter gegangen ." Die Sammlung erschien erst 1828 mit Notenbeilagen bei Cotta in Stuttgart unter dem Titel: "Stimmen des russischen Volks in Liedern", nachdem 1823 Proben im "Morgenblatt" veröffentlicht worden waren. Von 1817 bis 1821 arbeitete von Goetze (auch Goeze) aus Estland, unehelicher Sohn von Peter Otto Zoege von Manteuffel, im Kultusdepartement in St. Petersburg. 1827 veröffentlichte er dort seine Übersetzung: "Serbische Volkslieder". Ein Jahr später trat er seinen Dienst im Finanzministerium an, wo er dem Minister Graf von Cancrin nahestand. 1860 nahm er als Staatsrat seinen Abschied vom Beamtenleben (siehe Goed. Loose Photograph. Condition: Very Good. A fine sitting portrait titled "Eskimo Chief" by O.D. Goetze, who operated his wall tent studio in Nome, Alaska. He captures here an Inuit man wearing a fur-trimmed garment and animal skin footwear. An original sepia toned, silver gelatin print, measuring 9-1/4 x 7-3/8 inches wide, with minor wear and some toning verso. The image is signed in negative by Goetze and bears his "1035 / Eskimo Chief / Nome Alaska" at lower left. "Otto Daniel Goetze was born in Missouri in 1871, one of twelve children born to German immigrant parents. After traveling and working in Walla Walla and Seattle, Washington, and in Oregon, Goetze and his brother followed the Gold Rush north in 1898. Goetze spent two years in Southeast Alaska before moving to Nome, where he established the Alaska Photo Company in a wall tent on Kester Way. For the next seven years, Goetze explored and photographed western Alaska and Siberia. In 1904, he visited St. Louis and photographed that city's World's Fair. In 1909, the Goetze brothers sold their Nome studio to the Lomen Brothers" Anchorage Museum.
