Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The classic guide to Suffolk's rich heritage of churches. Available again by public demand, Suffolk Churches has long been recognised as a classic; Pevsner described it as "outstanding" and calls its gazetteer "an unfailing guide". The second part is the gazetteer to individual churches, followed by a supplement on Victorian Churches and Churchbuilding and a list of lost and ruined churches. This fifth edition includes a supplement, Victorian Church Building and Restoration by Anne Riches and a Survey of Lost and Ruined Churches by John Blatchly and PeterNortheast. Ex-libris bookplate of George Zarnecki on front pastedown. Dustjacket in plastic protectice cover. Some foxing to endpapers. Slight creasing to folding map. Top right hand corner front cover slightly bumped. Slight wear & slight soiling to spine, covers, corners & dustjacket. ; George Zarnecki (1915â"2008) was a distinguished Polish-British art historian, best known for his pioneering studies of English Romanesque sculpture and medieval art. Born Jerzy Zarnecki in Stara Osota (now Ukraine) , he studied art history at Jagiellonian University in Krakà w, earning his MA in 1938. During World War II, Zarnecki served in the Polish army and narrowly escaped German captivity before fleeing to England in 1943. There, he joined the Free Polish Forces and contributed to documenting Poland's cultural losses under Nazi occupation. In 1945, Zarnecki began his career at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he would remain for nearly four decades. He earned his PhD in 1950 with groundbreaking research on English Romanesque sculpture and rose to become deputy director of the institute. A gifted teacher and scholar, Zarnecki played a pivotal role in shaping the Courtauldâs reputation during its "golden age." His publications, including English Romanesque Sculpture (1951) and Art of the Medieval World (1975) , are considered foundational works in medieval art history. Zarneckiâs expertise extended beyond academia; he curated major exhibitions such as "English Romanesque Art" at the Hayward Gallery in 1984, which brought medieval art to wider public attention. He was also deeply committed to supporting Polish scholars and students throughout his career. His achievements earned him numerous honors, including election as a Fellow of the British Academy and appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). George Zarnecki passed away in 2008 at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy as one of the foremost authorities on medieval art. His personal library reflected his lifelong dedication to the subject, containing rare and significant works that informed his research and teaching. Books from his collection often focused on Romanesque sculpture, medieval architecture, and European art historyâ"fields central to his scholarly contributions. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xiv, 272 pages.
