Les Salampasu, autrefois appelés Akawandao, constituent une petite peuplade de la province du Kasaï central que l'on estimait à près de 154.000 personnes en 1999. Ils parlent une langue voisine du ruund (lanque lunda) du point de vue de la structure mais plus proche du ciluba (lanque des L…uba occidentaux) sur le plan lexical (voir MANIACKY, 1997). L'origine de la désignation ethnique n'est pas clairement établie (PRUITT, 1973, pp.432-433). D'un point de vue étymologique, le mot salampsu serait scindé en deux terme bien distincts: sala (le tatouage) et mpasu (le criquet ou la sauterelle). De là, plusieurs hypothèses furent avancées, la plupart provenant des Salampasu,eux-mêmes. La première fait un rapprochement entre la densité de population en territoire salampsu (avec des notions de virilité et de fertilité sous-jacentes) et la rapidité de multiplication des criquets. La deuxième hypothése établit un parallèle entre le son de l'ancienne trompe de guerre des Salampsu et le bruit d'un essaime de criquets. Une troisième hypothèse fait un autre lien entre les termes sala et mpasu : certains Salampsu affirmaient que leurs scarifications faciales entretenaient un rapprochement formel avec les criquets.
