Kraak wares were exported in large quantities to Europe and exerted a great influence on the development of European ceramics, being extensively copied at Delft and other potteries. In this exhibition we trace their origins to the mid 16th century. The nucleus of the exhibition is the group of fine blue-and-white wares know as "Transitional Wares", which introduced a new style of painting into ceramic art - spontaneous, naturalistic and a refreshing change from the conventional and formal imperial designs. Equally important were the export wares of the Tianqi and Chonghzen periods for the Japanese market - the enamelled wares, with or without underglaze, the Ko-sometsuke and the Shonsui wares. These wares, highly treasured in Japan, had a profound influence on Japanese ceramics. Also included in the exhibition are other wares for the domestic market, such as monochrome, polychrome and blanc de chine, as well as the "Swatow" wares exported to Southeast Asia. Many of the pieces on display are on loan from collections of members of the Society, while some are from other local sources.
