Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Lois and Louis Darling (illustrator). Apparent first edition, copyright page notes: "Eleventh Printing C" directly above "copyright 1962". Green clothbound without a dustjacket. Exterior is clean and square, minor rub wear to cloth and spine. Interior is also clean and tightly bound. Book has frequent, neat underlining/notations to text, which do not detract from use of the book but negate the collectible value. The title page has a half-inch scribble mark from a ballpoint pen at the upper corner margin (apparently this was this launching point for marking up the entire book!). Despite prior textbook use, book is still very clean and presentable, and highly usable for reading/research.

Bound in dark green cloth boards with bright gilt lettering to the spine and front cover. This edition contains no indication of subsequent printings, but lacks the "First Printing" statement present in true firsts, making it an early trade printing from the year of original publication. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This first edition is in good condition. The binding is tight, and the pages are clean. There is staining on the front cover, which prevents us from describing this book as very good or near fine, but the rest of the book is in very good condition. (See photo). The Sea Serpents Around Us, by Louis and Lois Darling, published 1965. Louis Darling illustrated the Beverly Cleary books (Ramona, Ribsy, etc.) and The Mouse On The Motorcycle books. He and his wife Lois together illustrated this wonderful book. The Sea Serpents Around Us tells the history of sea serpents, including several famous examples like the Loch Ness Monster and the Manchester Sea Serpent. A whimsical ancestral chart is shown, which includes dinosaurs, dragons, and crocodiles. The authors explain that after bounties and rewards were placed on sea serpents heads, they all decided to go into hiding and pretend to be extinct. It is illustrated with wonderful whimsical drawings, most of which stretch over two pages.
Drawings by Lois and Louis Darling (illustrator). Later printing. Silent Spring, a stand against the wide-spread use of synthetic pesticides, is Rachel Carson's (1907-1964) most influential book. Fighting both cancer and chemical companies, Carson informed the public of the detrimental affects of such pesticides as DDT, thus inspiring the nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides as well as the formation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A powerful female figure, marine biologist, and conservationist, it is no surprise Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, albeit posthumously, by President Jimmy Carter. Penciled ownership of Virginia W. Hill on the half-title page dated January 1963, possibly the same Hill as the Denver philanthropist with the foundation of the same name. Light edge wear and soiling fore edge text block, multiple abrasions and tape slivers to front endpapers and ffep verso, else near fine in price-clipped, mildly rubbed and edge worn (especially spine tips), very good or better dust jacket, in mylar cover. Hardcover, top edge stained yellow, in dust jacket.
