Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. "When Sir John Franklin sailed off into the Arctic in 1845 in search of the elusive Northwest Passage it marked the beginning of a new era. The complete disappearance of the Franklin expedition with its 129 men sparked such international concern that the fate of this missing expedition displaced or at least overshadowed the search for the passage itself. Some forty expeditions were sent out in the next decade to establish the fate of the missing Franklin party. Eventually, Lady Jane Franklin engaged M'Clintock to command another search expedition which finally solved the Franklin mystery." - paraphrased from new Introduction to this reprint of the 1859 first edition. p. xl, 375. Foldout maps and illustrations. Prior owner's name upon front free endpaper otherwise clean and unmarked with light wear. Dust jacket not included. An attractive copy of this fascinating history.; Sm 8vo.
