[Hell Opened, So that, The Sinner Meditating Upon His sorrows while living, It will be closed at the hour of death. Considerations distributed seven days of the Week. Written In The Italian Language By Fr. Juan Pinamonti of the extinct Company of Jesus. And Translated into the Spanish Desiring the salvation of souls]. 7 infernal plates and a frontispiece. Fifth Spanish edition. 12mo., endpaper, frontispiece, title, pp-3-192, endpaper, 7 captioned plates, 1 historiated and many decorative initials, 6 tailpieces, in nineteenth-century full mottled calf, gilt titles and decorations on spine, Spanish text, old holograph signature in pencil on front endpaper in blue ink and added doodles around a tailpiece, bookseller's note loosely inserted, Spanish text. Barcelona, Por Bernardo Pla, n.d., possibly 1800. £750.00 Text and plates sharp, binding a trifle rubbed. Palau 226177. Scarce. Must have been published after 1733 when the Jesuits were dissolved and possibly before 1815 when they were resurrected. An eschatological work translated from Pinamonti's ? l'Inferno Aperto al Cristiano perche non ventri' published in 1688. Designed to scare both the lapsing and the observant Christian into obedience to Catholicism. One wonders if Mercedes Marti, presumably a girl, who signed the book also added the little creatures around an angelic tailpiece. The plates, seemingly issued for the first time in this edition, are very scary bringing the superstitious reader close up to his or her potential fate with the damned and tortured of Hell. The French bookseller's note attempts to re-jig this beautiful little book of demons and tortures into a Joycean item by virtue of it appearing in ?Portrait' . 243572.
