All 24 original color plates are present. The boards show some light wear, including bumping at the corners and the top and bottom of the spine. Rear inner hinge cracked, binding else intact. Two long scratches to ffep, and small tear at fore-edge of last few pages. No prior owner's marks. Sixth Edition.

Original blue cloth, covers with bevelled edges. Front cover blind-titled against gilt background and decorated in maroon & green, with addition of "Halesowen Grammar School" in decorative gilt type above & below central decoration; rear with blindstamped ruled borders. Dark brown endpapers, Halesowen Grammar School prize bookplate dated 1886 on front pastedown. Untitled backstrip of unsightly appearance, being worn with loss at head & foot and along untidily split rear hinge. Front hinge moderately rubbed. Rear cover rubbed and lightly marked. Upper and lower edges of both front and rear covers a little rubbed, with a few minor nicks and bumps; outer corners worn. Front endpapers with lengthy split along hinge; white inner-facing sides of flyleaves at both front and rear a little spotted. No dust jacket called for. Binding showing wear, but still holding; contents for the most part clean and tight. FAIR, or excellent reading / working copy.

Size quarto, 10" tall, 46 pages. Mid brown cloth covered boards with titles on gilt frame surrounded by a leafy branch in green to the front cover and plain spine, attractive School Board for London prize gilt vignette on the rear cover. Condition good, the binding is slightly rubbed at the edges otherwise very nice. There is foxing to the title page, contents page and first 3 text pages and also the last four text pages, the margins of the last colour plate and the publisher's advertisements and rear end-paper. The rest of the contents are quite clean, there is the odd spot or two to the margins of a couple of the plates but the plates are good, printed on different paper and tipped in to the book. With each plate there are excellent instructions on how to execute the sketch from start to finish and there are also vignettes as chapter headpieces which on the contents page are also recommended to the reader can be reproduced as further sketching lessons. The contents have a typical tan and a notable amount of dusty prints and little marks throughout in line with the book's age and library status, but the main body of text remains perfectly legible and the pages are sturdy and well-bound. The plates remain vibrant. Fine for it's age and fit for purpose as a reading copy.
