A circular mark, probably a rubber stamp, has been vigorously blacked out, and some of that blotting shows through to the title page. Another blotted out mark on the last page of the text as well. Endpapers are an unusual patterned design. Bookplate on inside front cover with crown, double headed eagle (or goose), 4 lions and some curtains. The Forest, or The Romance of the Forest, was first published in 1791. It was Radcliffe's third book, but her first successful one. It went through several editions, including this translation into French. Radcliffe is considered the creator of the Gothic genre. Early editions of her novels, even incomplete ones, as quite scarce.
