Obwohl Rothko zu seinen Lebzeiten kein Buch publizierte, erwähnte er offenbar gelegentlich Freunden und Verwandten gegenüber, daß ein Manuskript von ihm existiere. Das außergewöhnliche Schriftstück mit dem Originaltitel The Artist's Reality, das 20 Jahre nach dem Tod des Künstlers in einem alten Ordner gefunden wurde, kann nun zum ersten Mal veröffentlicht werden. Das Buch, das wohl um 1940/41 entstand, enthält Kapitel zu zentralen Themen der Kunst, wie z.B.
