Textseiten, die ersten 12 Seiten mit Spuren von ( hinterlegtem )Wurmfraß, absolut sauber. Die 3 Manuskripte ( 112 Seiten ) in makelloser, sehr schöner Kalligrafie !! Titelblätter der beiden Drucke ( 121 Seiten ) jeweils mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke und gestochener Kupferstich-Vignette. Alle Verfasser der 5 Grabreden werden namentlich erwähnt. Anna Maria Mauricia von Österreich - spanisch Ana de Austria, französisch Anne d'Autriche - (* 22. September 1601 in Valladolid; ? 20. Januar 1666 in Paris) war eine spanisch-portugiesische Infantin und Erzherzogin von Österreich aus dem Hause Habsburg. Durch ihre Ehe mit Ludwig XIII. war sie vom 24. November 1615 bis 14. Mai 1643 Königin von Frankreich und Navarra sowie vom 14. Mai 1643 bis 7. September 1651 als Mutter des noch minderjährigen Königs Ludwig XIV. Regentin von Frankreich. ( Wikipedia ).

First edition, second state (without dedication leaf to the Dauphine, Marie Anne Christine Victoire de Baviere, who died in 1690, and the breasts of the "impudiques sirenes" on p. 210 are not exposed). The prayer for the Dauphine is on p. 69. Octavo. [2], 1-46, 48-223, 223-260, [4, blank] pp. Engraved throughout, the text in a double rule border, with numerous lovely engraved vignettes, head- and tailpieces, initials by Senault. Early full green morocco. Boards tooled in gilt and with gilt central device. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt. With red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. With some rubbing to board edges and corners. Previous owner's old ink signature on front free endpaper, date 1823. Internally very clean. Housed in a felt-lined, green cloth clamshell with morocco spine label. Overall a very nice copy. "Louis Senault followed Pierre Moreau in producing two writing books (one dated 1688) and then concentrating on successive editions of a devotional work printed from the same plates. But while Moreau finished by producing printed books with some of the characteristics of handwriting, Senault endeavoured to preserve in his engraved books the full flavour of a contemporary manuscript. After the death of his daughter, Elizabeth Senault, he produced some equally attractive smaller engraved Heures Nouvelles dedicated to the Grand Dauphin" (Printing and the Mind of Man, British Museum Section). Probablement imprimée aux frais de l'auteur, cette plaquette fort rare forme une adresse aux États-Généraux du Royaume des Pays-Bas, attirant l'attention de leurs "hautes et nobles puissances" sur l'état précaire de l'agriculture dans le pays, et proposant évidemment des remèdes.L'auteur est un quasi-inconnu, mais il a soin, au titre, de faire savoir ses mérites et son infortune (imméritée, il va de soi), se présentant comme "nommé percepteur à vie de la division de Hoves par arrêté du Premier Consul du 12 Germinal an XII [2 avril 1804], remplacé dans ses fonctions sans avoir jamais été ni suspendu, ni destitué par aucune autorité, sans même avoir reçu ni avis de son remplacement, ni ordre de cesser ses fonctions". Jammes, Belles Écritures No. 40. Beautiful specimen of an entirely engraved book, one of the masterpieces of French calligraphy, by the calligrapher and engraver Louis Senault. The text of this devotional work, is engraved in cursive writing, each page surrounded by a double frame-line. Many pages are adorned with magnificent floriated and historiated initials, vignettes, and borders. Senault endeavoured to preserve in his engraved books the full flavour of a contemporary manuscript. 'The elegant roman script of this book is ornamented with capitals framed by vignette landscapes or designs of birds and flowers. Calligraphic flourishes or floral designs frequently fill empty spaces at the bottom of a page. Prints by artists such as Israel Silvestre surely inspired the landscape vignettes which ornament the book' (Catalogue of the Exhibition 2000 Years of Calligraphy, Baltimore, 1965, No. 101). Second issue of the first edition, with the bosoms of the mermaids on p. 210 covered and without dedication. The book being originally dedicated to Madame la Dauphine of Bavaria, the mermaids with the uncovered bosoms were deemed indecent. The dedication was forbidden in the following issue. - With bookplate of Ambrosius Firmin Didot dated 1850, inside front-cover. An exceptionally beautiful copy in a very fine contemporary binding.[(4385)].
