Add to basketIn the larger and rarer format --- Impressive and scarce edition, of large folio format, of this famous work by the two Russian classics. Viktor Vasnetsov's design for The Song of Wise Oleg "served as an impetus to the revival and further development of national traditions in book art" (Fedorova, our translation): styled as an ancient Russian manuscript, the book unfolds like an accordion, telling the tragic story of prince Oleg. Vasnetsov created decorative initials, head- and endpieces, along with four chromolithographed drawings: 'Meeting with the Wizard', 'Farewell to the Horse', 'He Stepped on the Skull of the Horse', 'Trizna' (a funeral feast). The font, resembling early Cyrillic script, was designed by book artist Viktor Zamirailo. The work was published in quarto format in St Petersburg in 1899 to commemorate Aleksandr Pushkin's centenary. This second edition, issued during World War I, is significantly rarer and in a much larger format, with a redesigned upper wrapper. Provenance: Physical description:Large folio (48 x 34 cm). [6] ll. incl. 4 colour plates tipped-in and wrappers. Accordion-style publisher's printed wrappers. Condition:A bit stained and cockled from waterstaining along edges throughout, occasional light foxing, still a pleasant example in spite of the vulnerability of the production. Bibliography:

In 1884 Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov and a number of other artists were commissioned to paint frescos in St Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kyiv, which had recently been constructed to celebrate a 900 years since Vladimir's Christianisation of Kiev Rus in 897. The somewhat controversial results of this undertaking are documented in this profusely illustrated guide.

There is a page dated December 25, 1910 by the author: this is quite likely a printed facsimile rather than actually signed. There is an inscription on the endpaper, probably real and not printed, dated 1912 (probably by the text author, not the artist). Oblong cloth, approximately 9 and 1/2 by 13 inches, circa 1910. The book presents 75 traditional Russian proverbs or sayings, each with an accompanying tipped in illustration after works by Vasnetsov. Although the book went through several printings by 1914, all are uncommon in the market. Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (1848-1926) was a beloved artist of historical, mythological and folklore subjects. He was also an inventive and accomplished architect, and helped design uniforms for the Russian Army. This book presents a series of artworks originally undertaken in the 19th century to illustrate well known Russian sayings. Condition: Overall good with some scuffing and slight soiling to covers, age toning/darkening to pages, inner hinges cracked but binding quite sound, remnants of an old label on front cover, some stamps and prices written at rear endpaper, old stamp and old inscription on front endpaper, old ink inscription and old abrasion on inner pastedown, a few pages very slightly nicked at edge, corners and tips a bit bumped, cloth ties worn, with rear tie partly lacking, some minor shelf and handling wear, overall still a sound copy. Text entirely in Russian.
