Mars, 1579] 1 volume in-folio (37 x 24 cm) de 12 feuillets non chiffrés comprenant le titre, l'extrait du privilège, l'avis au lecteur, le texte intitulé "De l'Orgine, Estat et demeure des anciens français", 421-(15) pages. Collationné complet. Très belle et grande marque du libraire Sébastien Nivelle gravée sur boi sur le titre (13,5 x 9,5 cm). Reliure de l'époque plein veau brun avec grand ombilic doré au centre des plats, dos à nerfs, pièce de titre refait probablement au XIXe siècle. Reliure solide. Cuir matifié et frotté, usures aux coins, coiffes et coupes, avec manque de cuir. Intérieur en bon état. A noter une ancienne mouillure dans le coin inférieur 5 ou 6 des premiers feuillets, loin du texte (papier fragilisé en bordure).Les gardes blanches manquent. L'exemplaire mérite une habile restauration pour en faire un bel exemplaire en jolie condition d'époque. Edition originale rare. Tirage du titre avec la grande marque de Nivelle (il existe un tirage avec une petite vignette). « Cet ouvrage est curieux. L'auteur y traite son sujet avec beaucoup d'exactitude, et il cite tous les bons auteurs qui ont parlé des françois et dont il a tiré beaucoup d'éclaircissement pour l'histoire » (à propos du Sommaire, Pierre Bayle) Nicolas Vignier est né à Bar-sur-Seine (1530-1596), juriste et théologien de confession calviniste, fut le médecin et historiographe personnel d'Henri III. Son traité de l'Origine, état et demeure des anciens français fut célèbre en son temps et est ici en première édition (il sera publié séparément en 1582). "Le Sommaire de l'histoire des Français (1579) de Nicolas Vignier est une histoire rationnelle, rédigée avec beaucoup de soin, mais sans imagination, et le talent de raconter fait complètement défaut à l'auteur. Le style qui convient à la composition historique n'existe pas encore." Le volume s'ouvre sur avec l'an 395 et la mort du dernier empereur romain Théodose. Vient ensuite l'arrivée des Bourguignons, des Vandales et Wisigoths en la Gaule. Le premier roi des Français, Pharamond Ier (420-429), etc. Le volume s'achève sur la date de 1515 et la mort du roi Louis XII et l'accession au trône de son cousin et gendre, François d'Angoulême, mari de la duchesse Claude de Bretagne, sous le nom de François Ier. Bon exemplaire de cet ouvrage rare, surtout en condition d'époque.

Nicolas Vignier (1530-1596) was a French lawyer, historiographer and theologian. He was born in Bar-sur-Seine, in the modern-day department of Aube, France. He initially trained as a doctor; but after his conversion to Catholicism, became the personal historiographer to Henry III of France. After his death, his works were printed by his son, Nicolas Vignier Jr. This is an incredibly scarce work on the history of the church, from Jesus Christ's baptism until the fifteenth century.
