Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1900, 12mo, vi, [7]-88pp. Ink margin lines or underlining (usually of one or two lines only) on 18 pages, else G+. A very interesting study in the old nature versus nurture theme. The Jukes family tree (not their real name) is contrasted with the Edwards family, beginning with Jonathan Edwards. The Edwards family was chosen partly because one of Jonathan Edwards's descendants presided over the New York Prison Commission when it employed Mr. Dugdale to make his study of the Jukes family in 1874. Mr. Dugdale had become interested because so many of the Jukes's had ended up in prison. The Jukes family traits were idleness, ignorance, and vulgarity, whereas the Edwards family traits were just the opposite - vulgarity, ignorance, and idleness. Just kidding - to see if you're paying attention. The Edwards family traits were intelligence, persistence, and nobility of character. Needless to say, none of this looks real good on the Jukes's resumes.
