Fattah (born 1929 in Assiout, Egypt) is a distinguished criminologist and a pioneer in the field of victimology. After earning his law degree from the University of Cairo in 1948, he served in various prosecutorial roles in Egypt. In 1961, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Vienna's Institute of Criminology, where he was introduced to victimology by Professor Roland Grassberger. Dr. Fattah obtained his Ph. D. In Criminology from the Università de Montrà al in 1968, becoming the first individual in Canada to earn a doctorate in this discipline. He subsequently taught at the Università de Montrà al until 1974. In 1974, he founded the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, and served as its first chair. Throughout his career, Dr. Fattah has authored numerous influential publications, including Criminology: Past, Present and Future and From Crime Policy to Victim Policy: Reorienting the Justice System. His contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, such as the Konrad Adenauer Research Prize (1993) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Lià ge, Belgium (1995). Blanda. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Nuevo. 1. The motivation to perpetrate a victimizing act comes into being through needs, urges and drives. It emerges from contacts, communications, interactions, attitudes and counter-attitudes. Not infrequently, the prospective victim is involved consciously or unconsciously in the motivational process as well as in the process of mental reasoning and rationalization the victimizer engages in prior to the commission of the crime. The study of crime victims has become an integral part of criminology. In fact victimology has the potential of reshaping the entire field of criminology. It may very well provide the long-awaited paradigm shift that criminology badly needs, given the dismal failure of its traditional paradigms, such as the search for the causes of crime, deterrence, rehabilitation, treatment, just deserts, etc. Unfortunately, this highly ambitious goal remains, to date, an unfulfilled promise. 460 gr. No Aplica (illustrator). Libro.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. No signatures. A small 7mm tear to front panel of dust-jacket. Dust-jacket protected in archival cover. A nice, clean copy of this title.; xvi, 528 pages. Brown boards with gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 233 x 153mm. An anthology. Numerous contributors. Text in English. "Saudi Arabia has changed beyond all recognition in the past few decades, and the country's writers have been pre-eminent in grappling with the dilemmas, the cultural jarring and the identity problems thrown up by such an accelerated pace of change. "Beyond The Dunes" opens up for the first time the diversity and richness of contemporary Saudi Arabian literature to an English-speaking audience in this uniquely accessible book. Mansour al Hazimi, Salma Khadra Jayyusi and Ezzat Khattab have put together a varied selection of poetry, short stories, novel extracts, personal accounts, drama and essays which provide a fascinating insight into the challenges and tensions of a culture that is striving to balance globalisation and modernity with highly cherished traditional values. The social dislocation experienced by Saudi Arabians finds vivid formal expression in the dramas included in this volume, which may surprise many Western readers with their bold experimentalism and surrealist elements. Novelist Ahmad al Siba'I, a more traditional writer, offers a reflective, humanistic response to the world, whilst poets such as Ghassan al-Khunaizi, Ahmad al Mulla and Huda al Daghfaq reflect both the rich stylistic heritage of Saudi literature and the new techniques and outlook of modern Arabic poetry. Even when they are harking back to the vanished world of pre-modern Saudi Arabia, many of these writers reflect generational dialogues and an awareness of contemporary resonances. "Beyond the Dunes" places women's voices firmly in the centre of the Saudi literary canon for the first time, reflecting the increasing pre-eminence of writers such as Raja' 'Alem, Qumasha al-Ulayyan, Noura al-Ghamidi and Fawziyya Abu Khalid. This ground-breaking book provides an indispensable introduction to the thoughts, forms and expressions of one of the most complex and fascinating of world literatures at a moment of pivotal transformation.".
