Bellows (1814-1882) was an American clergyman famous for his oratory and lyceum. He was the founder and first and only President of the United States Sanitary Commission between 1861 and 1878. His most famous work was Unconditional Loyalty (1863) which was widely read during the Civil War and was very pro-Union. The following is printed under Bellows's portrait: "H. W. Bellows" [facsimile signature] and "Rev. Henry W. Bellows, D. D." Also printed below the portrait in small text is "Engd. by A. H. Ritchie" and "G. P. Putnam.". Ritchie, A. H. (illustrator).
