In March 1799, Mr. Wright brought a civil action against Thomas Judkin Fitzgerald, the High Sheriff of Tipperary, for assault and battery, an extraordinary case that exposed the brutal excesses of martial law during the suppression of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Fitzgerald, notorious for his summary floggings and arbitrary punishments, had ordered Wright to be whipped without trial, allegedly for possessing seditious papers. The trial, held in Ireland, became a rare moment of legal reckoning for one of the rebellion's most feared enforcers. Though Fitzgerald defended his actions as necessary for public order, the case raised troubling questions about the limits of authority and the erosion of civil liberties under emergency rule, and it stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of counter-revolutionary justice. 31 pages, printed in double columns.
